Meet John Cantu

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Cantu.

Hi John, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My curiosity for photography started when became curious about cameras and video cameras. When I was in high school, I found myself interested in wanting to capture events and trips with the only camera I had, a disposable camera. I was always eager to get the photos developed to see the moments I captured. For as long as I can remember, I wanted people to feel what I felt through the lens. When I became a young father, I wanted to capture moments that allowed me to hold the moments that kept the memory alive. I purchased my first ‘real’ camera in 2015 which allowed me to catch moments for others that evoke emotion and be captivated by them. When I worked for Orange Theory Fitness is when I began to take the work more seriously and opened up the lens to taking photography for fitness and growing the brand.

During Covid, I offered porch sessions. The porch sessions grew my business and sparked continued opportunities that now allow me to continue to capture moments with families, lifestyle, and fitness. This work has also led to other opportunities with podcasts, social media marketing, and content creating. This small curiosity for a camera and moments has provided me with the opportunity to live out my passion full-time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building a photography business is not an easy task. One of my biggest struggles is identifying my style as a photographer, which will continue to develop and be refined as I continue in my career.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Some of my specialties are photography, podcasting, fitness, content creating, and social media marketing. I am known for my high energy, outgoing personality and ability to make people feel comfortable in front of a camera. I am proud of the variety of skills I provide which cover clients of different ages, imaginations, and creativity needs.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was raised by a single mom with a big extended family. I was adventurous, athletic, curious, picky eater (I’m coming around), outgoing and funny. I loved playing sports, especially baseball (Go ‘Stros!).
