Hi Kayla J, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began providing makeup services at the age of 16 to the girls at my high school. I actually didn’t like makeup until I joined the dance team and was required to wear it for every performance. I underestimated how talented I was until I started doing other faces. Then I realized the power I had in my fingers. I’ve been slaying faces ever since.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming a professional makeup artist at a young age was a little challenging. I got my first salon job at 18. In the beginning, I got turned down quite a bit for being too “new.” I also got criticized by other artists who were older than me. It was hard not to take it personal, but I grew thick skin which is something you need in this industry. Those experiences helped build my character as an artist. I no longer doubt my abilities and I’m confident in every job that I do.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in bridal and soft glam makeup that enhances natural beauty. My aesthetic incorporates a lot of neutral colors such as browns, nudes, and pinks. My signature soft glam look has been a favorite for years because it’s so universal and compliments any attire. I offer services for weddings, events, and photoshoots.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Being the only girl with 4 brothers, I was more of a tomboy growing up. I participated in a few sports, and didn’t really start being girly until I was in high school. I joined the dance team and we were required to wear makeup for every performance. My mom taught me how to do my own and I learned how to do others.
