Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Davis.
Hi Matthew, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Fitness has always been a huge part of my life. Growing up I had 2 parents that were addicted to drugs and struggled to give my siblings and me a stable environment. I always feared growing up I would fall into that same category of addiction. I would say around 14 years old I started to workout consistently. It then became my crutch throughout my teenage years. I moved around a lot with my father and I always turned to the gym for Comfort and stability. I found this overwhelming peace when I would workout, As I got older my grandfather always told me I should become a trainer so I can do what I love full time. I started out in a local gym Called sound fitness, I was 16 at the time. After doing that for a few years, I discovered Crossfit. This was in 2012 I believe. It was something I had never experienced. There was a community of people like me that enjoyed to workout and push themselves. So I jumped in and fell in love with the sport. Fast Forward a few years to 2015 I was selling insurance and training on the side. My wife just found out she was pregnant with our first. We went to drop into a local gym in Tomball. We had a bunch of mutual friends attending the gym at the time. The gym was struggling and the current owner was looking for someone to come in and rebrand and start fresh. That’s when I met my now business partner Matt Mabry. He believed in me and gave us the start, We then Changed the Name and Crossfit Igneous was born. We started with around 25 members and almost 8 years later we are still going strong.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning your own business is never easy. If you don’t have highs and lows then most likely something is wrong. In the fitness industry retention is the name of the game. Our goal at Igneous was not to just have “Members”. We wanted to create a family atmosphere. We wanted to Crate a place where people can make friends. A place when you walk in you feels comfortable and at home. Our members aren’t just bodies here. I love getting to know every single person that walks through the door. 2 major events have happened since we opened. The first is we had a major highway come through. It took almost 2 years to complete it. Our members helped us keep going. They would shut down the roads to work. They probably changed the entrance 30 times. Still, they kept coming and kept supporting. The second was covid, It shut us down for 3 months. During that time my wife and I made homemade workout videos and funny introductions to send to all of our members. We also made those workouts completely public to reach as many people that might need help. We did lose members, but the majority of them stayed with us, and because of their loyalty we were able to keep the doors open. They are a true blessing to the success of this gym.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a traditional Crossfit Gym. I’ve been fortunate enough to workout and have a lot of wonderful gyms. We have taken the best from all and created Crossfit Igneous. The one thing I want to make sure people know is that EVERYONE can do this. You don’t have to be in a specific type of shape. We will take you in just as you are. We will motivate you and teach you everything you need to know about lifting safely and nutrition. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken someone in that doesn’t believe they can do this and 3 months later I don’t even recognize them. The confidence you build up through this process is unbelievable. I want to impact as many lives as possible.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I’ve learned that I can only control what I can control. Since we have such an amazing community of people, we were all there for each other and supportive in any way possible. We started off extremely worried about the future of our business and learned very quickly that our community was going to help us no matter what. We tried to be there for them no matter what each and every year and they are there for us. It was a true blessing.
