Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Chavez.
Hi Michael, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up in the barrio of southeast Houston, raised by my mother Rosalynn. I played sports as a child that I was able to make lifelong friends. On weekends I was spend time with my grandparents of my diseased father. My grandfather Don Pete instilled in me what it meant to provide. He owned over 7 cantina Bars in the greater east end. I would help count change and cut Chile. At 14 I knew my life would consist of music fashion & money. I met a friend better known as Nikey Mikey. He would later on become a successful shoe designer. He taught me a lot and would just give me so many free games. Everyone in my middle school and district would better know me as the guy with glitter shoes even the teachers. The creative in me would start piecing clothes together at the time supreme, bape & billionaire boys club would be in. At the time you wouldn’t really see 15-year-olds wearing high-end street fashion. I was a troubled teen who would end up getting removed from school and never returning. A big regret. At 18 I would join DYNA music group an independent music label as MikeC the hype man I would start to learn graphic design and Djing which would, later on, become my bread and butter. I would dabble in marketing but never had enough knowledge on it. I would design merchandise for the label and later on to have multiple Merch releases, tours & festivals. In 2021 I would find myself with more designs that wouldn’t fit the music label’s looks so I went ahead and created Styeez, Dynastyeez a branch out from the music label. Now having an LLC and over 10 designs I would start to release under @Dynastyeez Dynastyeez.com. In 2022 I would learn how to screen print under white cup ent and learned enough to press my own stuff. Selling out of all pieces in 22 was a great feeling. In 2023 the art of hustling the capsule will begin.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Running your own business is hard. Nothing easy about it. Looks easy through instagram but in all honestly, I took a hard hit with my first release. No one bought anything from the site. The only people who supported was my family. At that point, I wanted to give away. I started off by creating more products than I could handle so I end up having so much merchandise just sitting there with no sales coming in. I’d eventually give more free stuff away, later on, showed me it did end up helping the brand get out there more. That’s when I knew I had to market the correct way. Before my ads would fail and I was putting more out than I was getting back In. 2 years later and we are in good standing but still learning every day.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a DJ and Designer who creates work primarily for a hip-hop urban audience. In 2014, I co-founded and operated an independent record label, DYNA Music Group. Through DYNA, I have been a part of seven successful album releases. I have nearly a decade of experience as a DJ, including sharing bills with artists including Doeman, Southside Hoodlum, Nipsey Hussle, Big KRIT, Wale, Dizzy Wright, Shoreline Mafia, Ritz, and Freddie Gibbs. I’ve been featured at festivals including Atlanta’s A3C, SXSW, Mala Luna, Rolling Loud, and Red Bull Music events. My work has been featured in publications ranging from Remezcla to the Houston Chronicle, and partnerships feature record and distribution labels including 300 ENT and Sparta. In 2021, I founded Dynastyeez, LLC., a streetwear brand that handles every step of production from design to fabric sourcing to marketing.
Throughout my creative endeavors, I maintain the principle of social good, and with my team, I host annual service events including back-to-school drives, in collaboration with local institutions and fellow business owners.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The biggest lesson I learned is to trust yourself no matter what! Be loyal & show respect. Trusting the process, I feel like I made it thus far by just that. I believe in my art and so do the people so It gives me this confidence to just keep going! Having a solid strong team will help out the most when you need it! Enjoy everyone moment good and bad because that’s all we have in the end.
