Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Butler.
Hi Michelle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Michelle Butler, and I am the Calligrapher behind Michelle Elizabeth Calligraphy LLC, located in Katy, Texas.
Growing up, I enjoyed handwriting and drawing decorative letters. What began as a childhood hobby of creating fonts and letters grew into a career of teaching young children how to write. In 2011, I earned a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a specialization in Early Childhood Education from Texas A&M University. For over a decade, I have taught handwriting to 5- and 6-year-old students, hoping to foster in them a love for writing that they will carry with them. Little did I know that my love of handwriting would play an even bigger role in my life.
It was the Spring of 2020, and the world was in lockdown amid the COVID pandemic. Because of this, I was teaching virtual kindergarten from home and going through a difficult season in my life. Like so many others, when I was not teaching, I found myself with an excess of free time. I began scripting motivational quotes and Bible verses which provided the encouragement I needed.
In August 2020, I enrolled in a Modern Calligraphy course to learn the basics of calligraphy. My hope was that one day I could use it to encourage others in the same way that it had encouraged me. Over the next two years, as the world reopened, I began sharing my new skills with family and friends who helped me make the decision to turn my passion for calligraphy into a business.
In March of 2022, Michelle Elizabeth Calligraphy officially opened. Since opening, I have had the pleasure of working with many wonderful clients. Calligraphy is about bringing beauty to the ordinary; my business is about listening to my clients and creating a product designed specifically to meet their needs, so they have something beautiful and memorable for years to come.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like many startup businesses, bumps along the road are inevitable. Because my education degree did not prepare me for running a business, I have had to learn business and marketing skills all while balancing my full-time teaching job. Each bump that occurs is a learning experience that will help me to better run my business and ensure that Michelle Elizabeth Calligraphy will be successful in the years to come.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Michelle Elizabeth Calligraphy provides both calligraphy and hand lettering services to clients in the Katy and Houston areas.
Calligraphy services include scripting Bible verses, song lyrics, quotes, wedding envelopes, signage, place cards, ornaments and more on various mediums. Services also include hand-painted wine and champagne bottles. Bottle painting is based on current trends, timeless prints, and classic and seasonal designs. Custom-painted champagne and wine bottles make unique gifts for memorable occasions such as engagements, anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, and graduations.
What sets me apart from other calligraphers is the attention to detail I give to my clients. Every product that I make is unique as it is handwritten and designed with each client’s needs in mind. I am so proud of the growth of my business since its first opening in March, and I am grateful for each opportunity to work with my clients.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success is working hard to achieve a goal. It is being content with the results while always giving your best no matter the task, large or small. Life is about growth and moving forward no matter what life brings. My motto both in business and in life is to “set the bar high and expect higher results.”
