Rising Stars: Meet Rae Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rae Lewis.

Hi Rae, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi guys! I’m Rae, a creative mom with a dream to own an adult animated tv station! I’ve always identified as creative and it sucks because I didn’t realize it could be a career until after college. I started off sketching, but I draw digitally, paint, and work with resin and ceramics. However, visual art has my heart in a chokehold. In the beginning, I felt behind the curve.

I mean, I was lacking the basic fundamentals, how could I call myself an artist, ya know? But then something kicked me in the caboose and I just started creating the type of art I wanted to see. I enjoy being an extroverted alternative weirdo that’s a little mysterious from time to time, so I feel my art should be the same. Plus, it’s only going to get better. No spoilers, but I’m working on some very unique pieces— like nothing I’ve ever created before, so I’m excited about hiding that too!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitively has NOT been a smooth road.

I struggled with my art style, art block, and so many other self-inflicted issues. Imposter syndrome is a real demon when you’re trying to express yourself authentically. It has, however, been extremely rewarding. I learned to be patient and trust the process. Hands and feet are my greatest foes, but we’re trusting the process. Impatiently. But every accomplishment counts, no matter how small!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a freelance artist and the studio manager of Color Me Mine Pottery Painting Studio in the Houston Heights area. Art surrounds me now and I love that for me.

I don’t feel I have a special per se, but my focus right now is definitely comics. I am obsessed with creating my own comic that’ll soon develop into a cartoon. I also enjoy joining some of the social media challenges for artists.

If I had to guess I’d say I’m known for being the thirst trap artist. I post so inconsistently, people often DM me asking for new pieces or an update on a previous post. It’s almost embarrassing, but I’m working on it. I also made this up for comedic relief. I’m honestly just known as a creative of many talents. I’m a visual artist, stand-up comedian, a poet and a choreographer all in one. Creating is just in me and a part of who I am.

I’m proudest of my development as an artist. I feel like I started at the bottom and now I’m here. I feel like that development is also what sets me apart from others. I can watch YouTube for a week and know how to draw toenails. It’s magical
