Today we’d like to introduce you to Ray Thompson.
Hi Ray, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I spent 21 years in the Army and retired as a Major. In 2008 I returned to Florida with my son at his request, so he could finish his final years of High School near the beach. I transitioned into the corporate world while my son pursued his Aerospace Engineering degree at the University of Central Florida. Also, I decided to go back to school and started an MBA program. I always had a great interest in literature and began to get serious about writing my own books. At this time I started researching the publishing industry and considered a career change. My son just started his senior year of college when my world turned upside down.
A tragic motorcycle accident took my son’s life and sent me down a path I never bargained for. Everything in my life changed: beliefs, ambitions, values, and purpose. When the dust settled, I found myself in The Woodlands, Texas where I became the Phoenix rising from the ashes. I started Your Divine Birthright Publishers to give others a chance to tell their story to the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’m not sure who to give credit for this quote but a long time ago I was told—“The road to success is always under construction”. I don’t think the road I’ve been traveling has ever been smooth and therefore, I’ve had to learn how to change a tire or two. I believe everyone has struggles along their journey, and I also believe it’s the struggles that help build a person’s character. I have had to learn about the publishing industry from the ground up and through the school of hard knocks.
Unfortunately, I lost a lot of money, time, and effort dealing with some pretty unethical publishing companies out there. But in time, I developed an affordable, effective, and efficient process for publishing books. I learned in the military that the best way to get through a minefield is to follow the footsteps of someone that had safely made it through. I’ve successfully laid a path of footsteps in book publishing for others to follow.
