Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Porter.
Hi Meg, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Thanks for the opportunity to be interviewed! I’m Meg and I am natural light portrait photographer in the greater Houston area. I was always the girl with the camera in her hand. I still am. I can’t help it and it’s almost an extension of my eyes.
The first time I can vividly remember directing my first photoshoot was when my much younger sister was a toddler and my idea of fun was dressing her up with her stuffed animals and taking her portrait. In college, I had a friend who let me borrow their basic Nikon DSLR and my career began there. More and more friends started to ask me to take their portraits and I never stopped. For more than a decade, I’ve honed in on my craft, learned many lessons along the way, and have really enjoyed finding my niche within growing families in the Houston area.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has most definitely not been a smooth ride.
Over the years, my business has ebbed and flowed with my attention and focus. What used to be more of a passion project and side gig has turned into a full-time income for me that supports myself and my children. As a creative, it’s often hard to put yourself out there and trust that your hard work will pay off. I’ve learned throughout the years that when I prioritize my clients and being consistent then I always keep a busy schedule. My encouragement to other photographers would be to schedule out your time and make sure to leave room for rest and fun!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I photograph and preserve the important memories of growing families. I absolutely love documenting pregnancies, births, the first days of life, pudgy sitting babies, all the way up to their first birthday. I also host themed mini-sessions throughout the year.
It’s really humbling for me whenever I’ve realized I’ve been photographing some families for almost a decade. I absolutely love what I do and I love getting to meet so many clients who often become friends.
