Check Out Joe Robles’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Robles.

Hi Joe, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I began taking photos around Pasadena when I was 13 years old and haven’t stopped since. As a teen with no car, all I could do was take pictures of my friends in our neighborhood. As I got a bit older I began driving around with friends doing portraits, exploring, and just finding what we liked.

When I was 18, I worked for a local magazine photographing concerts..and that was not for me. The following year I quit and decided to pursue street photography. For a few years, the city was where I made most of my photographs, but in 2021 I decided I needed to do more. I began walking and driving around Pasadena again, really focusing on the people of the northside – where I’ve always lived.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Dropping out of college and telling everyone I would prefer to just chase my dream was a huge struggle initially. Not having the best start may have set me back but I didn’t allow it to stop me.

Another struggle has been the fact that I only want to do documentary work. It doesn’t necessarily make money, is long term and sometimes draining – but that doesn’t make me love it any less.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a 24-year-old documentary photographer. I primarily shoot black & white film and have processed all my own work for years. If I were to pick something I’m known for I’d say it’s shooting wide angle (15mm) and getting close. Also photographing North Pasadena and Folklorico very heavily.

I’d say what I’m most proud of and what sets me apart would be the same – I am trying to give the people of North Pasadena a voice. I am proud to be able to let my community know they are seen, their existence is important and I want to show them to the world.
