Hidden Gems: Meet Gary Metzler of Kleenbin Trash Can Cleaning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Metzler.

Hi Gary, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
About 4-5 years ago while overseas I saw these trucks with semi-enclosed trailers pull up to the curb at people’s houses and the workers got out and moved the empty trash cans easily onto the Trailer. They then blasted jets of water into the upturned trash cans, similar in action to a dishwasher cleaning utensils.

They then cleaned the inside of the trash cans and sanitized and fragranced them. I had a look at one of the cleaned trash cans and it looked and smelled brand new! I believed this concept was needed for Houston with our hot climate and many months of Summer and Humidity. I met with the company, Kleenbin and we negotiated the rights for me to set up in Texas and the USA. I registered the name and trademarked the product here in the US and then the fun started.

I couldn’t explain to anyone here in Houston how to build the trailers as the concept was so new, so I imported my first trailer into Texas from overseas, which was not an easy thing to do regards licensing and duties but eventually I got it done! I eventually partnered with some great guys here and we managed to fabricate and make the trailers here locally. It took a few years to get people to understand the concept but the long hours paid off and now everybody is keen to sign up!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The main hurdle we faced was people not understanding the concept and what we were trying to offer them. The money we spent on advertising was initially wasted as the concept was not understood but then after we did some free demonstrations for people and had friends and family signing up, the homeowners in the neighborhoods would watch the cleaning process and then sign-up.

We had to tweak the trailer build a few times to handle the knocks and bumps they took on the roads and we also had to adjust the cleaning products to eventually get to a consistency that was liked by our customers. We had to completely rebuild a trailer after the ‘Big Freeze’ that we had here in Houston as our water container and water pumps cracked and ruptured beyond repair.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We professionally clean, sanitize and deodorize Residential and Commercial trash cans and recycle bins. We go around to Homes or businesses with our Specialized Trailers that work like huge dishwashers and we Blast the dirt out of Trash Cans using high-pressure washers. We carry our water and cleaning products and the clients do not need to be home or present while we are there.

We take the Trash cans back up the curb for them, if needed. Although our Trailers are small in size, they are designed the same as any large Trash Can Cleaning Truck on the roads, and with our additional work area under the Trailer roof, we can deep clean the trailers more effectively than any other company out there.

We offer Monthly, Bi-Monthly, and Quarterly plans – No Contracts! We find most clients want to be on a regular plan to maintain the new look and smell of their newly cleaned trash cans throughout the year!
