Today, we’d like to introduce you to Alex Current. Alex was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Jessica Mosley.
Alex, thank you so much for joining us today. We’d love for you to bring our readers up to speed – can you introduce yourself and share your story?
My story…how much time do we have?? It’s been a journey that has been hard to predict and sometimes hard to believe. I started my career in sales after studying marketing in college. I started off in a “boiler room” type of sales jobs selling copiers B2B. It was exciting and terrifying as a 21 year old trying to meet with execs and sell a commodity. After a realization that I didn’t care about chasing the next commission check, I realized I had to find a career where I could impact lives. I joined a college to help students find jobs in their field of study. I built relationships with employers and the students to help jump start their careers and it was the best. Eventually the campus closed forcing me to find different employment, but no matter what my title was, my mission was to impact people’s lives for the better.
Fast forward to today, I work for a large energy company, who is often portrayed as the “bad guys.” I started volunteering to learn and do some DEI work and was able to directly impact colleagues in the wake of the George Floyd murder. The impact I have been able to be a part of has been life changing for me and am proud to do some very real work in this crucial space.
We’ve heard great things about your organization. For our readers who might not be as familiar, can you please tell them about the organization?
Our initiative revolves around humanizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. We use several approaches to speak to different individual personalities. We rely heavily on story-telling and have been incredibly fortunate to land phenomenal speakers with even better stories that are thought provoking, inspiring, and change driven.
Jessica Mosley has been a great friend to us and I know you’ve got a great relationship as well. Maybe you can tell our audience a bit about Jessica and your experience with them.
Like most of the best connections I have made, Jessica was a recommendation based on some of her previous work with a colleague. The first meeting Jessica and I had, we clicked immediately. She asked the right questions, listened intently, and most refreshing of all, she led with her personality.
The first meeting we had, I came to Jess with some Spielberg ideas on an indie film budget. Jessica let me speak about all the details I envisioned, asked intentional questions, and set realistic expectations right from the beginning. She told me, almost like a psychic, what errors the people shooting the video would do. They were small things like camera direction, mic placement, room lighting. I warned the team what to look for and they still missed 2/3 of what Jessica said would happen. We laughed and she STILL took the rough content and created a video that had the impact we sought.
Jessica has always been an excellent communicator. She always answers the call or text I send timely and with incredible knowledge. One of my favorite qualities about Jess is the way she approaches our arrangement. It is truly a partnership. She genuinely wants to hear my ideas and freely lets me bounce ideas off of her and offers constructive suggestions on how to get maximum value out of whatever task is in front of us. She is genuinely a consultant with the most compassion. She took the time up front to learn WHY I care so deeply about the topics we discuss and clearly reflects my passion in her content. I am amazed every single time!
The last video we worked on together was the best example of our developed partnership. I had an idea based on a true story of a colleague who had a friend that sent a goodbye text. The friend was about to end her life and my colleagues response helped save her life. I told Jessica the story and for the next 20 minutes we described the video in detail. Jess said, we can simulate the actual text messages, and I described the bubbles popping up. Jessica talked about the background music as I described the visual on the screen. By the end, we were both in complete alignment and come to find out the vision we had was a a fly the same with some enhanced suggestions.
