Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Pedersen.
Hi Kim, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I began baking for friends and family years ago. I slowly started to learn how to decorate my baked goods. It started with birthday cakes for my nieces and nephews, then some for my friends for their special occasions. I will never forget sitting around a cake that I made for my good friend, Samantha, and having her group of friends tell me that I should start a bakery. ‘ABSOLUTELY NOT!’ was my response. I had no intention of making a business out of this. I just loved to do it, and it was fun for me. Fast forward about a year later and I was making more cakes, learning more decorating techniques, and really making a name for myself in the cake decorating business. I quickly grew by word of mouth and began to accept orders for wild creations that I would have never dreamed of before. I began carving cars of cake, replicating wine bottles, tackling multi-tier wedding cakes and just took off. I quit my career in eye care and took a risk at cake baking and decorating full time and it paid off in a major way. I could not be happier with how I got to where I am today!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, I would say I have had a smooth run, but not without its challenges. When I started, I was not as busy, and I was still able to juggle my 9-5 job. I would work then come home and bake and decorate all night long! I quite enjoyed it, but it was not sustainable. I had two small children to care for, a teenager, husband, family, friends, and I didn’t want to take any time more time away from them. After much debate, my husband and decided to pull the plug on my job and focus solely on the bakery. From one week to the next I didn’t know where my next order would come from. I built a great following in the Heights area, but I was moving to Fulshear and knew almost no clients in that area. I received a call from a local party venue, and they had seen my work and asked if I would help them make 30-50 cakes a week! I was absolutely stunned. I did that until they closed about 9 months later as it was such a pivotal part of my baking career. It allowed me to maintain my volume, create cool custom cakes to my other clients, and relocate my business to Fulshear seamlessly. I can’t thank my one-of-a-kind community enough for welcoming me and my cake business with overwhelming support!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create custom cakes and cookies. I specialize in 3 D sculpted cakes, and I’m known for creating cakes that are showstoppers. Cars, trains, ships, purses, shoes, hyper-realistic food, GODZILLA! You name it, I can make it happen. There are many bakers that create custom cakes or cookies, but I do BOTH and create the flavor profile that you would expect from a high-end product. So, not only do they look great, but they taste great. More than loving their reaction when they see my cakes, I LOVE the responses that I get back after they have enjoyed the flavors with their friends and families.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as making someone happy, making someone smile, making some feel great, making memories. If I have done that, it was a success!
