Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Dixon.
Amber, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Originally, I started photography in 2011 in college–working for the campus newspaper. Stopped for a bit and picked back up in 2017 two years after I moved back home to Shreveport, LA. My business became LLCed in 2019 right before COVID hit and since then I’ve just been photographing since then! My dear friend, Jarrett Warren [a fellow photographer] took me under his wing and that’s where I really became motivated. He helped me push through.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, no. It’s been a challenge. It fluctuates. But I’m grateful for all of my clientele because they remind me that I have a gift. They keep me going.
I would say the struggles were comparison and imposter syndrome. Not only photographers suffer with that but business owners, in general, do too. Even though it may be challenging, you have to keep pushing. I’ve surrounded myself with a good support system within my community–that helps me a lot.
I also try to look back at my work and see what I can improve on, and what can be done better with editing. Setting goals for yourself and constantly critiquing your work leaves room for improvement.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So, I specialize in portrait and wedding photography [with natural and studio light]. I’m proud of my improvement on editing, now I just need to get consistency down. I feel that capturing candid moments is what makes my photography unique–that way I can capture those moments that seem like memories in the mind, if that makes sense. I always tell my clients, “This is not a photoshoot. Have fun, be in the moment.” I tell them this to be at a level of comfortability and ease. It works like a charm every time. Also, I tend to be pretty goofy with my clients. What’s the point of a photoshoot if you don’t make your clients feel comfortable? When my personality comes out, it comes out of my clients and that’s what I’m capturing.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Personality wise, growing up, I was a big crybaby. But who wasn’t? Technically, I still am. But seriously, just a goofy girl who loved everyone and will and still talk to a tree.
I would say that I was a sweet kid growing up. I always followed the rules and always tried to have fun! I’m the same way now.
I was really interested in the creative world when I was growing up so naturally, I felt like an artist. I loved painting, playing the viola, and dancing. I’ve always been a free spirit–I tend to go wherever the wind blew me.
