Hi Stefanee Gia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
In April of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, I started studying aromatherapy in an attempt to maintain some semblance of mental health and combat the effects of isolation. I had some previous experience with essential oils and wanted to expand my knowledge so that I could not only incorporate their benefits in my own life but also share with friends and family. I began my journey with some basic essential oil blends, and the birth of my business, Blackbird Botanicals, was born. Eventually, I expanded into candle making, which is when I believe I hit my stride and haven’t looked back since.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been without obstacles & challenges, but mostly it has been rewarding & enjoyable. I would say my biggest weakness is ANYTHING TO DO WITH COMPUTERS. ha. I am not tech savvy, nor do I have a great understanding of, or capability to manage social media; however, as with all things, I do my best, and I am learning. In addition, selling wax products in the hot summer months, in particular when it comes to shipping, has posed challenges. To combat this obstacle, I have used the summer months to organize my shop/goals and prepare for the Holiday Season.
Other than that, it has been a smooth road. I love what I do and try to remain open to what is and adjust accordingly.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Currently, we sell both in-person and online. I am an old soul that prefers human interaction, so I have built this business organically from the inside out. That means, in terms of customer acquisition, I spend a lot of time in the community networking and building one on one relationships versus social media. This year one of my main/immediate goals is to heighten my social media presence in an effort to expand my online sales and interactions.
Over the course of the next few years, I look to expand my exposure by getting into some local shops, doing more shows in the community, and strengthening my understanding of exactly what my consumer base desires.
For the ultimate future, I look to open a brick-and-mortar shop. Nothing large or overly fancy, but simple and approachable. My vision is to uplift other small/local businesses and offer not just a shop but a space, a vibe, an experience. With a small garden to enjoy tea, unique, ever-changing handmade offerings, and a celebration of local art, music, & flair.
