Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Robicheaux.
Hi Logan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I moved to Houston in 2018 from Dallas after graduating from the College of Visual Art and Design at the University of North Texas. After working some odd jobs, I reconnected with a lost contact and was able to break in at the entry-level of a well-respected and established design firm here in The Woodlands. After paying some dues and really taking in everything from my mentors, I worked my way up, and now for the past two years, I have been designing and managing my own jobs at the firm as a Jr. Designer
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think starting any career path comes with its challenges. For the first nine months that I lived in Houston, I would work at the design firm during the day, and then I would work an evening shift and weekends at my second job. And let me tell you, two jobs and sleeping on an air mattress for months on end will help you build some character! But the beauty of starting at the entry-level in this industry is that you get to learn about every small detail that goes into a project, from the concept to the finished product. So, I wouldn’t take back those months for anything, knowing what I know now.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Jr. Designer and Project Manager at SCM Design Group, and I specialize in Interior Design for Residential Remodeling. The reason I love residential design is that you are never dipping your feet into the same waters. Each home and client come with their own unique history and style, and it’s my job to bring those things together in a way that feels natural. When I design a space, I don’t want to feel like I have copied and paste something into it that never belonged.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
When it comes to networking or finding somone to guide you through the ropes, the best advice is to just take the plunge and reach out! The hardest lesson I learned was that no one is going to fall into your lap and hand out opportunities. Even if you haven’t spoken in years or it’s a loose connection, you never know what will happen if you don’t take those first steps.
