Today we’d like to introduce you to Cornelia Williams.
Hi Cornelia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Cornelia Williams, and I am the proud owner of Flourish Finance, LLC.
I was born and raised in the nature island of the Caribbean, Dominica. The diverse and eclectic Houston became home from 2010 after I completed my BBA in Accounting from Midwestern State University. Most of my family lives here, so it was an easy decision and transition for me, as to where I would live once I completed my degree.
I am also an individual who has always been interested in living in such a large city to gain experience and soak in the life’s work of others, build relationships and create a niche for my own self and my family.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I won’t say smooth but transitioning to Houston as my permanent residence may have been easier than others because of my family. I never felt homesick.
However, like many things in life, my journey to entrepreneurship had its fair share of difficulty. I’d say my biggest challenge was not knowing what I didn’t know. I had to work with coaches and get plugged into communities with other individuals like me to learn the know-hows, the ins, and the executions.
My next challenge was getting rid of my employee mindset. The transition from employee to employer was not an easy one to say the least. I had to shift my perspective and learn how to invest in myself, foster self-awareness, and work on my confidence.
Another issue I ran into was access to monetary funds. I started my business in 2020 and because of the age of my business, I found it difficult to gain the necessary funds for growth and development, which would have afforded me opportunities to expand.
Finally, getting no’s from cold emails and messages I sent out in hopes to convert to a sale. I will attribute my unsuccessful attempts to a lack of marketing knowledge. Thankfully, I have gained some insights into this industry and have been more effective at selling my business…especially in the Social Media realm.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Almost 20 years ago, I graduated top of my class as the best accounting student. It was then my passion gave birth. Immediately after, I pursued a four-year degree in accounting to perfect my skillset. I continued to excel while gaining hands on experience once I set foot in the workspace. I started off my career as an entry-level accountant and not too long before I was promoted to senior and management-level positions. My bosses have always been impressed with my attention to detail, organization skills, and my ability to work well in a team.
In 2020, I started expanding my knowledge through the inclusion of business journals, books, and articles. I continuously attend educational seminars, networking events and connect with like-minded individuals. It was during that time, I read that only 80% of businesses survive their first year in business. I felt compelled to do more, stop limiting myself and be more available to my clients and their needs.
My desire is to see more businesses thrive and flourish, and I set out to do just that through my own business – Flourish Finance, LLC. The clients that I work with rely on me for insightful analysis of their business finances, while they focus on running and growing their own business. They constantly refer me to their colleagues, confirming their trust in my expertise.
I also help my clients identify what affects their bottom line. That assists them to be more strategic in their decisions and eventually grow their businesses.
When I take a much-needed break from building my career, I enjoy spending quality time with my husband and two beautiful children. I love traveling and making self-care a priority. Achieving balance is life’s goal and I am actively working towards this.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I do not appreciate the Houston traffic, but I understand that it comes with growth and development. It is just an aspect of progress we must endure.
I love the diversity – people, food, culture. I appreciate the opportunities for progress and self-expansion. I really do love this city. It is HOME.
