Meet Michael Prince

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Prince.

Michael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was 3 years old, my parents gave me a drumset and told me to learn it. My dad helped me by playing videos of drum instruction, and even though I wasn’t very good, I was able to learn rhythm at a young age. My parents enrolled me in a music magnet elementary school in Houston when I was 5, and we had the opportunity to select an instrument of choice. Instead of choosing the drums, I switched to the violin.

Since then, I have been playing and performing all of my life. At around high school, I began to branch out to other genres and explore jazz, hip-hop, and r&b. Nowadays, I consider myself an all-around violinist that seeks to bring all genres together.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road is never going to be smooth if you are aiming to achieve something great. I see my time in college as a learning experience. COVID and the pandemic threw off my typical college experience, causing me to go virtual for a couple of semesters. However, after that, I saw any small inconvenience as a “speed bump, not a roadblock,” and I have been able to get through adversity very well.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My goal is to be as versatile as a musician as possible. My musical foundation was classical, which gave me the necessary technique and fundamentals to be taken seriously as a musician. Once I reached high school, I began to crossover into other musical genres, starting with jazz.

Now, when I am asked, I say I am a jazz, hip-hop, pop, r&b, and soul violinist. I think what currently sets me apart from others is my work ethic and ability to take risks. A lot of people don’t work hard enough even though they have the talent and skill to be some of the greatest of all time.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
An introverted introvert. I stuck to myself because I was always thinking about my next adventure. I always wanted to be able to build something or create something. I was interested in everything from music to sports to everything in between, and I tried to juggle them all at once. I still try to do it all at once.
