Rising Stars: Meet Tumi Adeleye

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tumi Adeleye.

Hi Tumi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
When I graduated college in 2018, my passion for photography was reignited through modeling and directing my shoots. I created most of my initial work with my iPhone as that was all I had access to at the time. I shifted from being in front of the camera to directing and photographing both myself and models who were willing to take a chance on me.

Over the course of two years, I saved up for my first camera, a Sony A7iii. Naturally, this catapulted my work and knowledge of photography in ways I couldn’t imagine leading me to where I am in my photography and storytelling journey

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Of course not. The road of creativity is often the least traveled, and the least encouraged route. Financial struggles are the most prominent. However, there are many avenues and resources that are centralized by organizations. By seeking them out, you naturally open your life to communities and similar creatives. Your community ends up being your biggest asset.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer and storyteller and want to be remembered for this. My photography highlights black stories, mental health, black love, and beauty. The majority of my work available at www.tumiadeleyer.com is directed, styled, and photographed by me.

People are typically drawn in by my use of colors and uniquely presenting a theme. I’m most proud of my consistency over the past five years. I haven’t stopped picking up my camera and don’t plan on it any time soon.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Me. My curiosity and willingness to explore said curiosity is really who and what I feel most comfortable crediting.
