Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Martin.
Hi Janelle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Well, in 2018, about 18 months prior to my training, my 17-year-old daughter, Regan, entered a treatment program for drug addiction. She dropped out of her senior year of high school and spent 10 months at The Pathway Program in Arizona. This experience changed our lives forever. Through the miracle of recovery, we rebuilt our lives and our relationship. Regan returned home at 18 years old with the intent of moving forward with her life.
After a month-long relapse, she became determined to be done with drugs forever and live the life she was called to live. We are lucky she is alive today. Our full story can be found on several podcasts and online on the Every Brain Matters YouTube channel. We frequently speak at events to offer hope to others who may be struggling, but also to end the stigma tied to addiction–it can happen to anyone, anywhere and it often doesn’t look like what many think it does.
Regan was about 6 months sober for the second time when I started my career as a provider of IASIS MicroCurrent Neurofeedback. I trained as an IASIS Certified Provider in August 2019. IASIS MicroCurrent Neurofeedback is a newer technology that helps the brain to rebalance itself and is very effective in helping many mental, emotional, and physical conditions, such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, headaches/migraines, ADD/ADHD, PTSD, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, addiction, autism and more. Regan naturally became my first client as she was experiencing anxiety, difficulty sleeping, attention issues, neck pain, and some cravings. Her experience was so positive and so helpful that she attributes it as a major factor in her sobriety. In the four years since then, we have both become licensed chemical dependency counselors, with the hope of giving back to families and their loved ones what we have been given through our journey of recovery.
Regan expressed a desire to join my private practice, The Mind Connection, in the summer of 2022. By then she was 3 years sober and working for a local adolescent recovery program in Houston, but wanted more time and flexibility to continue her education. I was so surprised, but mostly honored and humbled that after all, we had been through, she chose to work with me, and I knew she was going to be an amazing addition to The Mind Connection! She trained as an IASIS Provider in August of 2022 and joined The Mind Connection in September. We are also trained in Brainspotting, which is a technique used to process unprocessed trauma without talking.
Today, we offer all things brain-related! We educate our clients on brain health and overall wellness, finding natural ways to help the body heal. IASIS is very effective in helping people reduce and/or eliminate medications and their unwanted side effects. We see people of all ages and our system is safe and effective for children as young as babies. It is painless, non-invasive, and relaxing. We pride ourselves in keeping our fees affordable so that natural alternatives can be accessed and utilized by those who are seeking them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to get here was not smooth at all! I wanted to train to be a neurofeedback provider in 2018, but my life kind of derailed when my daughter’s drug addiction became a crisis and she needed help. Drug addiction is something that takes over not only the addict’s life but the family’s as well. It is extremely difficult and denial plays a big part, especially in the beginning.
I have moved my practice 3 times in four years, looking for the right place to grow my business and figuring out, through trial and error, how best to use IASIS MCN. I became an LCDC and have been pursuing my LPC through a master’s program for the past 16 months on top of working full-time. We are constantly learning new things about ourselves, our craft, and how we can be better for our clients.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Mind Connection, LLC?
I started The Mind Connection in 2021 with the intent to establish myself and my practice as its own unique way to treat mental health naturally. What sets us apart is that we are IASIS MicroCurrent Neurofeedback providers first, and we specialize in using this therapy with extensive experience and solid belief in its effectiveness. It can be used with or without traditional talk therapy and often is preferred over talk therapy.
We partner with other like-minded professionals, including counselors, who see the value in non-pharmaceutical approaches to mental health. Our clients continually refer others to us, which further solidifies the success of IASIS MicroCurrent Neurofeedback and their confidence in us as practitioners. We also offer a line of organic, non-toxic products in our office, called Rowe Casa Organics. These are affordable and healthy alternatives to everything from wellness, hormones, essential oils, cleaning products, hair/body care, pets, and more.
What we really want readers to know is that there is a safe, natural alternative to medications for mental health without side effects and years of therapy! This is especially true for children–medication is not the only option for conditions like anxiety and ADD/ADHD or behavioral disorders. And we are not expensive–all pricing is listed on our website.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
Janelle: Christmastime with our family all together playing games at the big dining room table and laughing until we cried. So much fun and love wrapped up in our family get-togethers my entire childhood.
Regan: Spending time playing with my brother–he was my happy place.
