Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Wessels.
Hi Emma, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My photography journey started as a way to express my creative side, in a way I had not explored before. I am still fascinated by the idea of creating a moment and freezing it. I’ve always been a hands-on, crafty person but photography is different. I have never been very good at drawing or painting but my creative side has always been interested and amazed at the way a painting can evoke emotion in people.
Photography gives me the freedom and ability to connect with people through a photograph in the same way. That is what I love about portrait photography! So for the last three or so years, I have focused on that. What started as an interest turned into a passion and I could not be happier with that process!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When it comes to photography, it is not a linear process. I learned so much through trial and error and trying new ideas and concepts. Starting a business is hard and for the first year, I had maybe five or six clients.
But as I honed my skill, I gained more confidence and started putting myself out there more. My clientele increased and so did my love for the craft! I think the biggest challenge (and I know many creatives can relate) is getting over the feeling that you are not good enough.
Social media makes it so easy to compare your work to others and to feel discouraged because you may not be where you want to be in terms of your skill. When I catch myself comparing I go back and look at the progress I’ve made and the amazing experiences I’ve had. This keeps me grounded and encouraged to move forward!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in portrait photography. I am currently focusing on high school seniors, college graduates, engagements, and special occasion portraits. I would say I am known for my high school senior photography!
I am always so proud of my clients! Getting in front of a camera and posing is not an easy feat and it can feel awkward at first. However, I have met so many amazing people that have given me the opportunity to help them feel more comfortable in front of my lens, and most importantly have fun while doing it!
My number one priority is to make my clients at ease and I will always show them the back of my camera so that they can see why I am saying things like “YES I LOVE THAT!!” or “That is STUNNING”! The thing that sets me apart is definitely my use of the word stunning, it is my favorite thing to say on a shoot because I can’t think of a better way to express how amazing my clients look!!
