Community Highlights: Meet Jasmine Payton of JazzE Esthetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Payton.

Hi Jasmine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
JazzE Esthetics was founded in 2022 in Houston, Tx. I have always had a passion for skincare, and being a student in the forever-evolving industry, I believe that people should be confident in the skin that they are in. It took me some time to have the confidence that I currently possess now due to my own skin insecurities. Once I learned what worked for me, I embraced it & ran with it. I strive to be able to give that same light to someone else young and mature. The idea of creating a lane for myself, making a mark on the esthetics industry, and giving others the same boost of confidence that was given to me after my very first facial, is something that I looks forward to giving others. It helps that I have a background in Chemistry because I am able to connect the dots on why certain skincare brands, ingredients, and treatments work and do not work.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I believe that the COVID-19 pandemic really gave me a lot of time to think and act on what I truly wanted to do. With my background in Chemistry, I have always known that I wanted to stay in the sciences, but did not know in what capacity. The pandemic gave me a chance to figure out how to turn a passionate hobby into a career. I became really discouraged when it took some time for me to actually start at the school I wanted to attend. I had to reassure myself that this is where I am supposed to be; I attended Ogle School of Hair, Skin & Nails for 10 months as a part-time student as I balanced my 8-5 job and attended classes from 6 pm-9:30 pm Monday-Friday to get my goal of completing 750hrs of esthetics education. Here, I also met my mentor & instructor, Michelle Megan. Although it has not been a smooth road, it has been a rewarding one. Within one year of being licensed, I took that leap of faith, branded myself, and opened JazzE Esthetics in the heart of 5th Ward Houston, Tx. I chose this location for several reasons, one being that I wanted to see more people of color be properly educated in skin care, educated on what is being used, and give the community a safe space for self-care. We are in the era of influencers. What you see online is not always the best. Now you have a licensed Esthetician in the community that can clear any of the myths or tell you, “That’s not for you.”

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
I am a licensed esthetician that specializes in all things facial-related. I am known for my Signature JazzE facial, which allows me to customize a facial based on your skin care needs. For my men, I am known for my Classic Man, which is also customizable. I am most proud of my brand itself. Why, because it allows me to educate, create, & connect with people. I am PCA Skin Care, Dermalogica Skin Care, & Image Skin Care certified, which are also brands that I sell in my shop. I have a wide variety of facial offerings. I take my clients as young as 12 years old. It’s my goal is to launch my own skincare line very soon. I am the proudest when clients leave the spa feeling more comfortable in the skin that they are in.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice to anyone starting out is to just go for it. Shake the doubt & remove the fear. Clients will come, & business will grow. Be open to new ideas. Patience is a virtue, and everyone is NOT meant to be a client. It’s okay to say no, it’s okay to go at your pace. Why? Because it’s YOURS! Do it for YOU; the naysayers will be around. It’s not a “little” business, it’s YOUR business!
