Today, we’d like to introduce you to Camille Roark. Camille was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Adan Avila.
Camille, can you walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I really got started in this business on accident. I was in a jam and in need of a makeup artist for an event, and the artists at the traditional mall makeup counters couldn’t accommodate me. If I’m being honest, even before then, I wasn’t truly comfortable going there to get my makeup done. I felt vulnerable out on display and I wasn’t confident I’d like the look they chose for me. I’m an introvert and a natural people pleaser which is a bit of conflict of interest when it comes to getting your makeup done. I didn’t know how to communicate my likes and dislikes, because the entire experience was quite intimidating. I wanted to create a space for people to get these same high quality makeup services but in the comfort of their own home.
Please tell us more about your brand, C. Roark Distriction
As a freelance makeup artist, I help models and photographers prepare for photoshoots, and everyday people look and feel like models. Part of our competitive advantage is our mobile services, many of our customers who do not have the luxury of coming to our home studio can pay a premium to get served at their home, studio, or another location of choice, as long as they book in advance, we can arrange to meet them within the specified period, thereby opening us up to more customers than businesses that are not operating a flexible model. Also, I value intimate experiences. I feel like I create a safe space to unwind and get ready, away from all the over simulation we’re faced with when we enter bigger establishments.
So, as we mentioned to our audience earlier, you were introduced to us by Adan Avila and Ad’Ann Designs and we really admire them and what they’ve built. For folks who might not be as familiar, can you tell them a bit about your experience with Ad’Ann Designs.
As soon as Adan told me he was moving to the next stage in his business, I wanted to support him. As his best friend I HAD to be his first official paid client. I wanted him to know that’s just how much I believed in him and was willing to support any goals he had. I’m still in awe at the work he put into that Barcelona piece. I felt like a princess. As a little girl I dreamed of traveling the world in designer dresses with my best friend. Who knew my best friend would be the designer?
When I met Adan, I knew he was special, and that he’d go far in the industry. We first linked on a collaboration shoot that didn’t quite live up to our expectations, but we found we shared some common goals. During that time, I also got to see his professional standards and vision as well.
In the beginning, Adan was ALL WORK. Baybayyyy, Adan did not PLAY about his business. So much so, that I found myself reminding him that although he runs a business, he’s also a brand, and he would be remiss to limit himself to that one talent and deprive the world of his amazing personality.
The amount of personal and professional growth I’ve seen in him since then, fascinates me.
