Today we’d like to introduce you to Evelyn Munoz.
Hi Evelyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m from Nicaragua, studied International Relations in my country, moved into US on 2016, mother of 2 boys (6 and 1 yr), married with a Chicano and entrepreneur. In Nicaragua, I used to manage my dad’s company until I moved here. I started working in EM Electrical Solutions, my husband’s company, helping with the paperwork (quotes, invoices, accounts, payroll, etc.). I do really wanted to do something and feel professional again, but I was looking for an opportunity that allowed me to keep my son with me cuz the daycare wasn’t an option for me… I found an office job from 9-5, $13hr and $700/mo daycare, so I didn’t take it, and I started digging in my mind what to do, and few months later, someone introduced me what I’m doing today. I’m a Financial Advisor specialized in retirement and College Saving Plans, in 2019 I got my life insurance license, in 2020, I got my securities license, and OMG, it was a challenge; this was my first time studying in English… but I passed 3 exams, and now I can work in all the 50 States, and I am working on get retired in the next 10 years to enjoy with my family and travel.
A year ago, in 2022, when I was pregnant, I founded “Networking de Mujeres Empresarias en Katy y Alrededores” with the support of some colleagues, clients, and friends. At the beginning, I create that space for professional or entrepreneurs women like me, with baby/kids, who wants to do something, but doesn’t know where to start and where to leave the kids, so yes, this is going to be the first networking accepting kids in the meetings… In my first event, I had 26 attendees; it was a success! But 3 months later, I received some feedback that the information sharing at those events were so important and why it wasn’t available for men… as I felt that was right; it wasn’t my purpose; I’d really want to help my Latino community, I didn’t want to restrict anyone, I didn’t want people struggle with taxes, how to create a company, if LLC or DBA, etc., or being scammed for migration matters, so I switch to both genders, and now it’s called “El Club de Networking Empresarial en Katy y Alrededores,” so, this way I’m doing my bit for my community, will be my legacy for them “the right information from the right persons.”
Latin people lacks of knowledge about how things work here in the US, and when you move here, there is an adaptational phase who anybody struggles (believe me, even as I manage a company in my country, here is completely different). People needs to have the right information about anything here. For example, people doesn’t know they can retire here without a legal status; if a person here pays his taxes, he/she has some benefits from the IRS, like get retired with their own plan, of course, is optional, but everybody comes here looking for the American dream, so why not making it happen??? That is why I am here, connecting with more industries who wants to do their bit for this community who needs to be educated and supported…
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The language, I think that was one of the things I was struggling a lot because I’ve never studied in English before and I was so afraid on failing my exams when I studied for my licenses, but I did it good! It was only in my mind… By the other hand, a challenge was when I started my carrier as Entrepreneur, you know when you are new in a country and you lack of connections, don’t know people, etc., it was hard to start and being recognized for what you are doing and more with a little one who’s mom refuses to take him to the daycare hahaha, so it was a challenge for me. If I had to visit a client in the morning, I had to ask if I could take my baby first; if not, I had to schedule when my husband was home to leave the baby with him while I worked.
I realized that most people obstacles are in their mind, like for me the English and my fear on failing! You will never know in what you are good until you try it!!!
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about E&E Munoz Firm?
Well, I am a Financial Advisor, I help individuals or business owners making them more happy in achieving their financial goals and saving for the future (retirement, kids’ education, etc. Also, I help them with insurance needs and a plan to pay off debt earlier.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Of course, and I’m pretty sure we all learned anything about it. It was a time with lot of challenges, from adapting to the new zoom era, work with people without any kind of personal contact but also making people more conscious in what is more important for them and value their time…
