Meet George Woodard of eLsqrd Media Group in Katy

Today we’d like to introduce you to George Woodard.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My first introduction into web development was in 2003. I was a senior in High School and wasn’t playing sports anymore (played football freshman year and basketball freshman through junior year) my need to find something that constructively occupied my time was growing. During my last semester as a senior, I enrolled in an Advanced Computer Science course to study web development and programming.

While in college during undergrad, I had the opportunity to join a business venture with some of my family. My responsibilities included building a website for the business. In 2004, websites were a rare commodity but it showed the professionalism of our business at the time. After college and while employed full time, the itch of going back to entrepreneurship always weighed heavily on my mind.

I made the decision in 2012 to pursue my dream of making a passion of mine a business. In 2014, I made the decision to quit my full-time job, go back to get my Masters in Computer Science and pursue my business full time. Now I work with business across the US to develop brands, build WordPress based websites and manage digital marketing efforts.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not. My conscience will not allow me to lie and say it has been a smooth road. The idea of ownership and entrepreneurship has created a misnomer of glamour. Success is about 10% of the journey with being an entrepreneur. Do not get me wrong, it is probably the greatest decision I have ever made but it is by no means smooth.

There are a lot of uncertainties that come along with it. Two major challenges you have to face on a consistent basis is failure and disappointment. Even when you have “mastered” your niche or calling, you still have to be 100% comfortable with both. If you let either get to you, it is time to take a step back.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the eLsqrd Media Group story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is a digital marketing agency. We specialize in WordPress Development, Business Applications for web and mobile, Social Media Marketing, SEO, and Branding. We connect with businesses looking to expand their brand online. We sit down with them to discover where they are and what their next steps going ahead look like. Then we take that information and create a strategy to help drive leads to their business that creates awareness to their services.

I am most proud of the growth and evolution of the company. At first, it started off as just offering web development only. It wasn’t until 2 years ago, we started offering more services including launching our first app. That was a great milestone and a challenge but we completed it.

What sets us apart from others is our customer service. In the simplest terms, without customers, we simply wouldn’t thrive. So we strive to remain knowledgeable, very helpful and lean. Sometimes you run into large agencies that have big teams, and they play their part for some businesses, but we choose to remain lean so we can remain flexible.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
“Luck favors the prepared” – Unknown

For me, I do not believe in luck. But I do believe in a strong work ethic, learning to roll with the punches and just enjoying life. With those three things, everything will play out to the best every time. If you can control it, you can fix it.

My faith and resiliency are two traits I have carried with me throughout life. Neither has failed when both are operating together. Whether it is life or business, you put in the work there will be a reward. I had to learn that the hard way.

In life, things will not always be fair, and that is ok. Life sometimes doesn’t go as planned and we have to learn to adapt. Grieve, take some time away from people, cry, get angry. Do whatever you need to process those emotions, find what needs to be done and do it. I’ve encountered a lot of people that simply making an excuse for a problem that can be fixed with a little hard work.
