Life & Work with Astou D

Today we’d like to introduce you to Astou D.

Astou, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started cooking when I was 12 years old. I initially thought of cooking as a hobby and a creative space for measurements of sauces and spices. My passion for cooking began to grow due to the amazing compliments I received from family and friends. I used to play it safe when it came to making food; however now I am always eager to try new things and make gourmet recipes from scratch as I go. I like to think of the kitchen being my lab, and I am the scientist mixing and placing pieces together to formulate a savory dish. Food always brings people together, whether it is a cookout, family reunion, romantic dinner, or wedding, etc. I provide a wide range of quality cuisines due to being Senegalese; I can incorporate my culture into every finished product. I cook with so much love, consideration, and quality. I offer luxury private catering, food prep services, corporate and special event services based on the individual needs. My slogan is a savory taste for any occasion. I am open to bookings that include travel.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an entrepreneur is not always a smooth road. You have to constantly adapt to change and take some losses. The most important lesson is to allow those mistakes and struggles to assist in your growth and longevity of your business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am private chef. I specialize in American and African cuisine. I am known for my amazing lamb chops, crispy chicken wings, homemade mashed potatoes, Jollof rice, fresh vegetables, baked mac and cheese, and grilled meats with plantains. I am most proud of the growth of my brand, catering for people I used to watch on TV and competing and winning chef competitions. I genuinely care about the outcome of every dish that I make. I love to make people happy; therefore, I am always willing to go the extra mile for my clients.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is defined be resilience when change happens unexpectedly. I believe success should include a balance of your loved ones and maintaining your morals and values when achieving your goals. Success also means giving back to others who may want to strive for a similar path as you.
