Hi Telless, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
When I lost my finance job in January, it felt like I was standing at a crossroads. To add to the mix, my wife shared the wonderful news that we were expecting our third child. I knew I needed to make a move, but I also wanted to be there for my growing family. So, I decided to turn this challenge into an opportunity and embarked on an exciting journey of entrepreneurship.
Over the past couple of years, I’ve tried my hand at a few things – real estate, cleaning services, marketing businesses – you name it. But none of these really clicked with me. But you know what? I didn’t let that get me down. My amazing wife suggested that I put my MBA and experience in venture capital, private equity, and startups to good use by becoming a consultant.
So, I took her advice and started offering my services on Upwork. It was a whole new world, connecting with clients from all sorts of fields like e-commerce, finance, and retail. And along the way, I discovered something pretty cool about myself – I’m a pretty good strategic thinker. This knack for strategy has been a game-changer for my clients, helping them improve their businesses no matter what industry they’re in.
Looking back, I can honestly say I’m proud of the journey I’ve been on. Sure, there were bumps along the way, but they led me to a career that’s not only fulfilling but also makes a real difference to others. And that’s I don’t take lightly.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The most formidable challenge I faced was defining the essence of my work. As a consultant, my offerings are intangible, rooted in service and knowledge, which can make it challenging to establish a product-market fit. I experimented with various facets of consulting, including digital marketing, business development, and financial analysis, in my quest to find the right niche.
Moreover, marketing consulting services presented its own set of challenges. It wasn’t as straightforward as setting up a website and announcing, “Here I am, ready to elevate your business.” However, I’ve always been inspired by the philosophies of successful companies and sought to incorporate them into my own venture. Facebook’s internal motto, “Move fast and break things,” resonated with me. It implies that while mistakes are inevitable, the fear of failure should not inhibit progress. Despite understanding this concept, experiencing and learning from it in real time was a tough but invaluable lesson.
