Today we’d like to introduce you to Parham Koohbor.
Parham, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I moved to the US 15 years ago from Iran, where I owned a network consulting company. Upon arriving in the US, I decided to make a bold career change and pursue my passion for dentistry. I found the field fascinating for many reasons, including its unique combination of medical science, engineering, and art.
Transitioning to dentistry was a significant challenge, especially as a 35-year-old immigrant with no prior academic background in biology. Nonetheless, I was determined to succeed. I enrolled at San Francisco State University and graduated cum laude with a B.S. degree in Cell & Molecular Biology, concentrating on Human Physiology. My hard work paid off when I was accepted into New York University’s College of Dentistry, where I earned my Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree.
Since graduating, I have gained diverse experience working as a general dentist in various settings, from small private practices to large corporations and government organizations. Committed to professional growth, I have also completed numerous hours of additional training in implantology through prestigious organizations like the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, International Congress of Oral Implantologists (of which I am a fellow member), and the American Academy of Prosthodontics.
Finally, just two months ago, I realized my dream of opening my own private practice, Pulse Dental. At Pulse Dental, we focus on implant and cosmetic dentistry, with an emphasis on digital dentistry. I am proud of the journey I’ve taken and grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to develop my skills and contribute to the field I love.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Throughout my journey, I have encountered numerous challenges, each presenting unique obstacles to overcome. Initially, migrating to a new country with my family was a daunting experience, as we had to navigate a foreign environment while managing familial responsibilities. Subsequently, attending school while grappling with language barriers and additional duties as a father proved to be a strenuous process. Moreover, competing with younger classmates who did not face the same challenges amplified the difficulty.
As I transitioned from school to the job market, I confronted a fresh set of challenges. Working as an associate dentist was demanding in itself, but it was the process of opening my dental practice that truly tested my resilience. From securing financing and finding an ideal location to preparing for the grand opening, I faced a multitude of hurdles. Furthermore, I had to tackle numerous issues related to marketing, staffing, and daily operations.
Each day in dental practice brings new challenges that necessitate innovative solutions. The dental industry is at a critical juncture, where large corporations increasingly dominate the market, leaving less room for private practices to thrive. Additionally, rapid advancements in digital technology require continuous adaptation to stay relevant. Insurance companies pose yet another barrier in delivering optimal patient care. In the wake of COVID-19, shortages in dental staff and supplies, as well as inflation, have further compounded the daily challenges faced by dental practitioners.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Pulse Dental, we provide a comprehensive range of general dentistry services while emphasizing on implant and cosmetic dentistry. Our innovative approach combines the technical aspects of dentistry with an artistic vision to create best possible results for our patients.

We utilize advanced tools such as intraoral scanners, facial scanners, and 3D printers to achieve highly accurate and predictable results. This level of precision enables us to deliver outstanding dental care and meet our patients’ diverse needs.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Patient trust is of the utmost importance to me as a healthcare provider. This fundamental principle serves as the gold standard in our profession for several reasons.
Firstly, establishing trust with a patient facilitates more effective treatment and care. When patients feel comfortable and confident in their healthcare provider’s abilities, they are more likely to follow medical advice and be forthcoming with critical information about their condition. This open communication enables me to provide the most appropriate care tailored to their individual needs.
Secondly, patient trust is a strong indicator of satisfaction and quality of care. When patients are happy with their treatment, they are more likely to return for future appointments and recommend the practice to others. This high patient retention rate and positive word-of-mouth are crucial for the success and growth of the business.
Moreover, trust signifies a commitment to prioritize the patient’s well-being and health above all else. This means continuously updating my knowledge and skills, maintaining the highest ethical standards, and working collaboratively with my colleagues to ensure the best possible care for each patient.
Furthermore, trust requires that I am aware of my limitations as a healthcare provider. If a situation arises where a patient requires a specialized treatment that I am not qualified to provide or is beyond the scope of my practice, I must refer them to the appropriate specialist, regardless of the potential financial implications for my business. This commitment to prioritizing patient welfare is crucial in fostering a strong relationship built on trust.
