Conversations with Jennifer Salazar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Salazar.

Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My curiosity for photography took off when I had to take a beginner course in college. Shortly after my first photography course, I became a fashion ambassador for New Orleans Fashion Week, which led me to the runway and editorial photography.

Documenting the fashion world through my photography inspired me to continue photographing the industries I was in love with. Being raised in a Latin household, music was a big part of my life and a great love of mine. I needed to build a music photography portfolio, so I started with The XX concert at Championsquare in New Orleans. I immediately fell in love with all your challenges when photographing live music. From then on, I started photographing many local shows at the most popular venues in the city. I’ve made relations with the promoters that throw the concerts, the venues, and artists.

Today I still photograph editorial fashion shoots whenever I interview a local artist for Hazze Media and concerts throughout the city. My next big project is photographing the upcoming Hangout Fest. This year I’m looking to expand my clientele in Austin and Houston.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve been on a pretty smooth road since I started my career, but it has its challenges, just like every industry. The biggest challenge is doing everything for my business; there are a lot of roles to fill. The easiest part is being the photographer, but other roles include the accountant, marketing specialist, social media manager, etc. I’m doing it all alone and figuring it out as I go.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a photographer that specializes in Music and Entertainment photography. My style is very clean-cut. I’m a natural at capturing the environment’s essence, energy, aesthetic, and specially curated events. I pay attention to many small details, such as the fashion choices of my subjects. I’m best known for my candid and (EDM) headbanger shots. I also pride myself in getting great shots of artists performing on stage without the mic blocking too much of their faces.

What matters most to you?
The quality of the photo matters the most to me. I love the clean-cut, vivid, and well-lit style.

Most of the time, you can tell when someone wasn’t going for artistic film/creative style and needed to adjust camera settings with better lighting.
