Today we’d like to introduce you to Darren Gazey.
Hi Darren, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My passion for Motorsports started when I was 19 in a small tent in the Welsh hills with a little Mini Cooper. The passion continued to grow as I started working for different race teams all over Europe in a variety of racing series. One of the companies I was working for built a LMP1 car with a UK-manufactured chassis to bring to USA for the ALMS (American LeMans Series). After that first time traveling to the US, I’ve been involved in many projects and races with roles ranging from Team Manager, Crew Chief, Fueler, and everything in between. Have had the opportunity to work on a variety of cars from LMP and GT, as well as many different championships and podiums. I have worked with Formula cars, restoring historical F1 cars, and handled data and technical advisor for the radical championship.
In the beginning of 2022, I took the leap of faith to launch DD Autosports with my business partner. Where we maintain service support race cars in a variety of different race series and track days. DD Autosports handles everything from building, restoring, set up work, driver coaching, and engineering, and working with a variety of vehicles from F1 and GP2 cars to GT3 plus everything in between at our facility based in Angleton, TX at MSR Houston.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As with most growing businesses, we have struggled with expanding our customer base. Word of mouth and reputation are primarily how our customers find us. People will go out and buy a fun car to drive but don’t realize how much more fun they can have with it. Once you have a professional pit crew behind you, the experience is much more enjoyable and rewarding.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I think our experience with all types of race cars and location trackside really sets us apart. Our priority is ensuring a true arrive and drive experience for everyone. We service and maintain the cars to the highest standard which ensures that the customer can trust the car they are driving. We have over 20 years experience, with multiple championships under our belt, so we know what it takes to build a winning car. Our services include everything from engineering and set up, to routine maintenance and driver coaching.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is at the end of a track day my customer can’t wipe the smile off their face. They proceed to tell me every detail about every corner, every pass and every lap. That is contagious and if you haven’t experienced it – you should. I can recall every customer’s best day, 20 years later.
