Today we’d like to introduce you to Jourdan Stansberry.
Hi Jourdan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Looking back on my childhood, I have always been a foodie but didn’t realize it. When you search a gift for food dance my picture should pop up, haha! Honestly, I don’t think my career is one that people actually set out to obtain, but I am grateful that it fell in my lap. Once I finished undergrad, I purposely worked a variety of jobs to figure out exactly what it was that I wanted to start my career in whole completely ignoring what it was that I love – anything food related. While I was 8 months pregnant, I was let go from my job as a Bank Teller and found myself on the search for the perfect career once again. With the help of a trusted colleague, I was sent a job posting for a health inspector. I remember thinking, “At this point, what do I have to lose?” I’ll never forget the discomfort I felt walking into an interview 8 months pregnant, more importantly I’ll never forget the confidence I had gained afterwards. Shortly after, I received a call with a job offer, and the rest was history!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have experienced some challenges along the way. I’ve been in my field for 8 years now, and while it hasn’t been horrible there have been moments of uncertainty. I started in professional position at 23 years old having not had the most positive experiences in the workplace. Sharing ideas, collaborating, and being terrified of criticism were huge learning curves for me, and while I’ve grown from shrinking myself, I do regret having not taken advantage of the opportunities that could’ve been beneficial. Life in every facet is a constant lesson.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
I am the sole owner of National Food Safety Co. I specialize in food safety training and certifications. If one works in a food service setting you are required by law to have a food safety certification, that’s where I come in. I focus on providing a more personalized and realistic training experience that aligns with the exam that my clients have to take in order to obtain certification. I also ensure to remain flexible and up to date in methods that work best to teach adult learners as well as staying informed of regulatory changes to provide soft consulting to clients in need. In summation, I provide Food Manager and Food Handler training via U.S. accredited programs. Training and exams are offered both online and in person, whichever best fits your needs!
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see the food safety industry shifting in a positive direction. I personally believe that food safety has been a long-ignored field. Typically jobs in this field require us to be the “bad guys” however, the focus is simply maintaining the safety of the consumer. The government has made tremendous changes to the food safety industry with programs that focus on preventing foodborne illnesses instead of responding. I see this industry making pivotal changes to the safety of food by the utilization of technology in traceability and reducing contamination.
