Meet Derek Deriso of Artisan Loft Salon in Pearland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Deriso.

Derek became a licensed cosmetologist in 2011, and immediately began advanced training from there. After working in your typical commission based salon for a few years, he branched out on his own and created the one man show of Derek Shane Salon, 2 years later, Derek would fulfill his dream of opening his own full service hair salon, combining the best elements of an upscale hair salon and suite rental. Artisan Loft Salon serves to bring both clients and stylists a fun and collaborative atmosphere where stylists still maintain their individual ownership status.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our struggles were similar to that of other entrepreneurs. Maintaining a work/life balance as a new parent, keeping construction on time and in budget, worrying daily about the risks you have taken on and how they will affect your family, all while putting on your best face for your family and clients.

Please tell us about Artisan Loft Salon.
The hair industry is rapidly moving towards suite rentals for hairstylists looking to own their own business, keep their own profits, and make their own schedules. Derek found after a couple of years that while this model does allow each of these things, what was lacking was the comradery, collaboration and inspiration you get in a traditional salon. Artisan Loft Salon allows stylists to have the best of both worlds. Artisan Loft doesn’t just accept any hairstylist willing to pay the rent – they must understand and be willing to support the vision of our salon and contribute to everyone’s success. Each stylist is an artist with a gift to share. Our proudest success thus far has been graduating one of our assistants to stylist, and supporting her in her endeavor of building a clientele.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory was meeting my future husband on the school bus in junior high, except he was my arch nemesis as the time!
