Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhomy Lopez.
Hi Rhomy, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My musical journey began at the age of 5 when seeing a spark in my eyes, my mother enrolled me in a piano academy near her workplace. Since then, music became both my language and refuge.
Over time, my passion propelled me to become a concert artist, a professional violinist, and a degree holder in musical pedagogy. For more than two decades, I’ve held steadfast in my commitment and love for music. Molto Allegretto Music Academy, my music institution, has made its mark in Venezuela, Colombia, and the United States, serving as a sanctuary for those who, like me, believe in the transformative power of music.
World stages, from the Berliner Philharmoniker to Carnegie Hall, hold tales and tunes that I’ve shared alongside the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and renowned maestros. However, 2019 holds a special place in my heart. The acknowledgment of a Latin Grammy for “Regreso” was a pinnacle moment in my career.
Within this journey, the establishment of El Sistema, Texas, has been one of the most exhilarating chapters. In just a year, we’ve witnessed how music acts as a bridge to unite and transform communities. Children and teens in Houston, Texas, armed with instruments and dreams, find in this wonderful institution a place to grow and thrive.
Along this path, my husband has been my rock and partner. Together, we’ve nurtured this dream, and his vision and love have been pivotal in the founding of El Sistema, Texas. My parents, who instilled in me a love for the arts from a young age, my brother, my constant support, and my children, the melody that fills my life, have all been crucial on this journey.
My life has been a symphony of highs and lows, of cheerful melodies and somber notes, yet always steered by love, passion, and the unwavering support of my family. Each day presents an opportunity to continue penning this song, and I am forever grateful for every note of it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My musical journey has been marked by challenges and tough decisions. It hasn’t always been smooth; it’s demanded immense perseverance, humility, and conviction. Migrating twice was undoubtedly one of the hardest challenges, leaving behind cherished memories and roots. Yet, seeking new horizons always alongside my family has given me the strength to persevere. Despite the adversities and longing for the past, I never gave up on my dreams. Music has been my anchor, the thread connecting my past with my present, shaping my story, and guiding every step I take.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
From the age of 5, music has been my guiding light and sanctuary. As a concert performer and violinist, I’ve had the privilege of playing on iconic stages like Carnegie Hall and alongside the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra. Together with my husband, Maestro Álvaro Carrillo, and Maestra Jessica Colmenares, we founded El Sistema Texas. This initiative, in just one year, has deeply impacted communities in Houston through the power of music.
Being recognized with a Latin Grammy in 2019 for “Regreso” was a moment I’ll never forget. Additionally, I’ve been honored to receive the “Yellow Rose of Texas” award and a special commendation from the Mayor’s Office of Houston, accolades that mirror my dedication to music and education.
Despite challenges, like emigrating twice, my passion for music has remained unwavering, always bolstered by the unwavering support of my family. Maestro Álvaro, my children, parents, and brother are the true inspiration behind every note and achievement. My life is a symphony of perseverance, love, and devotion to music.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Absolutely. I’d like to emphasize the transformative power of music. It’s not just an art form but a bridge that connects souls and cultures. Through projects like El Sistema Texas, I’ve witnessed how music can uplift communities and inspire the next generation. I am forever grateful for the opportunities and challenges that have shaped my journey, and I hope my story can inspire others to pursue their passions, no matter the obstacles. Always remember, every note played, no matter how fleeting, leaves an indelible mark on the world.
