Hi Michael, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The start of my business venture is nothing less than a miraculous journey. It all began when I relocated from Mount Laurel, NJ to Houston in January of this year. This move coincided with my departure from the Army and the beginning of a new remote job. Upon arriving in Houston, I had the opportunity to meet my new colleagues at the current company I was employed by, an experience that filled me with immense excitement.
As I settled into my new role, I started noticing certain aspects of the job that didn’t align well with my core values. Having spent 26 years in the Army, my military experience and training had often paralleled the teachings of the Project Management Institute (PMI), which is the basis for individuals aspiring to attain their Project Management Professional certification. This stark contrast prompted deep contemplation on my part.
Ultimately, I made a decision to step away from that position. I transitioned to a contracting role with a company that seemed more in line with the familiar dynamics I had encountered during my Army tenure, or so I believed. However, after encountering similar challenges with the new company for about a month and a half, I had a serious sit down with my heavenly father and asked, “lord is this what you want me to do, or is there something greater that you have planned for me?”
When the lord gave me my answer it became clear that my accumulated skills from the Army, combined with my Project Management Professional certifications, held a purpose beyond conventional employment. This revelation led to the birth of Sean’s Consulting Service—an embodiment of my ability to leverage the gifts given to me by my military service and the ability to combine them with my certifications from PMI.
Thus, my journey toward entrepreneurship commenced, guided by divine inspiration and a calling to utilize my unique skill set to propel me into the realm of business ownership.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Indeed, it’s widely acknowledged that anything of substantial value isn’t obtained without encountering challenges, trials, and difficulties along the way. The initial hurdle I faced was acquiring the multitude of certifications I hold. To pursue two of these certifications, I dedicated an entire month away from my military duties, and an additional 17 days were invested in securing the third. My study regimen often extended from 8:30 AM until the wee hours of the next morning, painting a picture of the relentless effort invested.
Following this demanding phase, the process of transitioning from New Jersey to Texas ensued alongside the complexities of family relocation. This endeavor of uprooting and relocating is a process on its own, a familiar experience for those acquainted with military life, where such moves are recurrent every two years.
Upon our arrival in Houston, a fresh challenge surfaced as my wife embarked on a quest for new employment. Having left a secure job behind due to the move, she embarked on a four-month journey to secure a new position, a timeline that aligned with my own journey.
The path we traversed was far from smooth, yet in evaluating its worth, every challenge and sacrifice became clear affirmations of its value.
