Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Williams.
Hi Kyra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began this journey in September of 2022 when I enrolled in MUA school in Norfolk, VA! I graduated in November and immediately knew this was something I wanted to make a career. I have now relocated to Conroe, TX, in February of 2023, where I have been a traveling makeup artist for the time being!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anyone in this industry will tell you that almost nothing about this job is easy (but still worth it)! Between gaining clientele, keeping up with your kit and new makeup trends, keeping inventory up to date, and making sure no makeup is expired, it can be a lot for one person! However, as I said, it is 100% worth it! I’ve been a makeup artist for almost a year now & I am still learning new things every day! The biggest struggle I’ve had myself that I think many people experience in this industry is gaining the clientele. Starting over in a new area has definitely been hard, especially in a city where there is already a lot of other amazing MUAs, but I know eventually, I will be able to turn this into something I do 100% full-time!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I named my business “KW Beauty Bar” because I did not want to put myself into just one category. As of right now, although I only offer makeup, I know down the road, I will have multiple different services available, and wanted to make sure my brand represented that. KW Beauty Bar will eventually be adding laser removal services, esthetics, lashes, PMU, and possibly nails! I believe having a “one-stop shop” will be what sets me apart from other beauticians in this industry. I also only have one price for my makeup services, which most MUAs don’t offer. At the end of the day, you are essentially using the same amount of makeup with almost the same amount of time for a natural, soft, and full glam, so why not charge that way? The only price differences is travel fees and wedding services! However, sign up for our email and text updates to get 10% off for your birthday service!
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Practice, practice, practice! Word of mouth is your best friend when it comes to gaining clientele! Find groups on Facebook to join or reach out to people to do free services in exchange for them to tag you on IG or Facebook host a facial party or makeup event that is very cheap or free! Although it’s never fun using your products and not getting paid to do it, it is the best way to get your name out there, and people usually don’t turn down free!
