Daily Inspiration: Meet Helen Spaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Spaw.

Helen Spaw

Helen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Since the beginning of my memories, I have been imagining and creating. In college and graduate school, I studied art therapy. Connecting with my own creative process is a practice I continue daily. I am currently working on an altered book project about Time. This project is sparking a series of works on canvas, paper, and mixed media miniature worlds. By engaging with my creative process, I gain insight, which is also the experience I help facilitate for my art session participants, open studios, and art circles.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life has many struggles along the way. Art making and other ways of self work help process those struggles so they aren’t blocking the road.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For my altered book about Time, I am taking pieces of my art and sketchbooks from the past 20+ years and re-working them into a volume that is a visual/feeling construct of time.

From this Time project, a mixed media series of paintings have appeared to me. These abstract paintings, consist of many layers, shapes, and colors that explain moments further than words.

Simultaneously, I have begun a series of watercolors with pencil on 22 x 28 paper called 21 Ways

My exploration of Time has also led me to create mixed media paintings for a series telling Stories. These pieces include sewing with quilting thread, which is new to me.

In addition, I continue creating miniature worlds, which recently have evolved into Miniature Healing Worlds

I hope these pieces inspire the discovery of connecting to one’s own creative process and healing work.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
I currently have some openings for participants in art classes, art circles, and individual art sessions. These art experiences are for exploring a variety of media and connecting to one’s inner guidance and creative process. My art is also available to show or for sale.
