Edward, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
At the tender age of 14, I embarked on a thrilling journey into the world of performance, captivating audiences at open mics and talent shows throughout the vibrant city of Houston. With unwavering determination, I left no stage unturned, catching the attention of talent scouts and production agencies. Following my graduation from James Madison High School, I began etching my name into the very fabric of the downtown local music scene.
My debut track, “Space City Kids,” recorded alongside the legendary Joe B of The Rebel Crew, marked a pivotal moment in my artistic journey. The Rebel Crew, a collective of B-Boys, Musicians, and Producers in Downtown and Heights Houston, became an integral part of my creative evolution. It was during this time that my dear friend, Fat Tony, introduced me to the power of branding, propelling my career to new heights.
In 2011, I took a bold step by relocating to the vibrant musical landscape of New York City. However, fate had its plans, and I found myself back in Houston during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was during this period that I made it my mission to nurture and celebrate the rich culture of Houston’s downtown scene.
My artistic journey is deeply influenced by a lineage of entrepreneurs, award-winning musicians, and remarkable women in my family. The eclectic sounds of 90s R&B, soul, funk, rock ‘n’ roll, hip-hop, and reggae are woven into the very fabric of my being, and you’ll hear these influences coursing through my music. It’s not just a performance; it’s a manifestation of my very essence – a living, breathing work of art.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey of being an artist isn’t a well-marked highway; it’s a winding road full of unexpected twists and turns. Sometimes, it feels like your creative GPS has lost its way, and the signal is weak. In those moments, I find solace in returning to the basics, grounding myself in what truly matters. It’s a soul-searching journey, a profound self-check, you could say.
That’s precisely why I poured my heart into writing my first book, “DEAR ARTIST: EVERYONE IS YOUR FRIEND.” It’s a labor of love, a creative manifesto crafted for all kinds of artists out there. Within its pages, you’ll find the essence of my own experiences and the heartfelt belief that, in this creative world, we’re all in this together. Every artist, every dreamer – we’re friends on this remarkable journey of self-expression and discovery.
