Rising Stars: Meet Danielle Boss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Boss.

Danielle Boss

Hi Danielle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have always had a love of gardening, and this passion boomed during the pandemic, as it quickly became a wonderful stress reliever while I was working in the healthcare world. However, during that same year, my youngest daughter started having serious health problems, and I chose to leave my nursing career to take care of her at home. While doing this, I developed a small business doing garden coaching and design, which was a great start and something I could work around taking care of my little girl. But I craved something more, and everywhere I looked I started seeing flowers and flower farms. I started researching this business venture in my area and quickly realized that there was both a need and a scarcity of supply. My husband and I had many serious talks, and we decided this could be the perfect venture for our family. I started growing as many flowers as I could at our home and making bouquets for sale in my community. In the spring of 2023, we purchased a property in Splendora, TX to fully expand the business, and Summer Skye Gardens Flower Farm was born. We are focused primarily on agro-tourism, offering a large U-Pick Flower Field, with plans to expand to workshops, classes, and other on-farm events. We also grow and sell flowers both for retail and wholesale. Our mission is to bring locally and sustainably grown, fresh, beautiful flowers and experiences in the wonders of nature to our local communities.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Probably the biggest struggle with starting this business was a radical shift in mindset of becoming an entrepreneur. I have worked my entire life, but always for someone else, and now I am at the helm of this business, making all the decisions. It is both fantastic and scary. Everything depends on me! But I am a fast learner and a go-getter, so I know I will be successful.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At our farm, our main focus is on agro-tourism. We strive to create a beautiful, peaceful, yet fun environment for people in the community to come visit. We have a large U-Pick area where people can come pick their own flowers and get the experience of being a flower farmer themselves. We will expand to host events, workshops, and classes this next year and also hope to focus on education for children specifically. We also grow loads of flowers for both retail and wholesale, including running a CSA throughout the seasons where individuals can receive fresh flower bouquets every week. One of our main goals is running our farm as sustainably and organically as possible while maintaining a bio-diverse environment to support our local wildlife, especially our pollinators.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Flowers are definitely here to stay, but I can see that more and more of the community is focused on supporting small businesses with interests in buying things that are grown and made locally. I think this bodes well for us small flower farmers in that we can provide both a need and a want in supplying beautiful, fresh flowers that are grown locally and sustainably.
