Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Bateman.
Hi Andrew, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Inspired by Metallica and their contemporaries, I began taking lessons at a local shop during seventh grade. This led to my first official performance for the middle school talent show that year. From there, I began play with several local rock and country bands where I would gain the introduction to improvisation that would serve me well throughout my musical endeavors. The greatest turning point came about when the privilege came about to study under Jeremy Garcia. Jeremy was (and remains) a top-tier traditional flamenco guitarist. It was a blending of these flamenco techniques mixed with a myriad of other contemporary styles that yielded my current style, which I would most accurately describe as flamenco fusion. Around this time, I began performing as a solo act through a process known as looping, wherein each song is built track by track. This process enabled me to provide the music of an ensemble in a one-man package and to offer ever-adaptable arrangements. This is the trajectory that I have remained on as a full-time musician for the past several years, and I see no signs of relenting soon. To date, it has been my privilege to perform for countless venues and private events as well as to share the stage with many other artists of tremendous talent and character.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Art as a source of provision has rarely if ever seemed a smooth avenue. Though I’m currently privileged to work with some terrific agencies, the majority of my professional career has been as much administration as performance. The juggling act of the self-booking musician is oftentimes extremely exhausting, especially in this post-pandemic world where the consistency of bookings has largely deteriorated.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I imagine that I am most known for both the finger-style flamenco techniques I as well as the looping process that I employ as a one-man band. While it’s always a treat to play with many of the other wonderful artists in this community, there is a freedom provided by looping. It’s a blank canvas every time from which to build a song with endless tonal and rhythmic possibilities. Alongside the many original and improvised pieces, I perform, I also had an ever-expanding repertoire of cover material that may be amended for any audience or venue, ensuring that sets are always fresh and varied. Whether black tie or blue-collar event, it is my privilege to provide music that is upscale, not uptight!
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
If I’m honest, I would have to unequivocally say that humility is the greatest lesson that has come out of this often ego-driven industry. The more you ask acknowledge the areas in which you lack, the more you’re able to learn and grow and draw from the many other fabulous musicians you encounter.
