Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Carothers.
Jacob, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
A little bit of background about myself real quick, I have been practicing massage therapy for over 4 years now and I have worked in multiple different environments ranging from spas to chiropractic offices and now, my own office. Not only that but over the years I have continued my education with different bodywork courses and continued going to college for physical therapy. This is not just some job to me; I truly do have a passion for helping others and educating them on how to improve without a dramatic change to their body. Now I bet you are wondering how my sessions are not just a typical massage and the first thing that comes to mind is that I recommend communication, now that is not to say I want to talk during the whole session but rather to get your feedback on pressure, sensitivity or any limits in range.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been up and down, after graduating from high school I had my heart set on going to college for engineering. Well I quickly found out after struggling with math for a few semesters that maybe that was not the path I was meant to take so I tried to find a new career I would enjoy. Luckily I did not find the career I was looking for but rather it found me, Physical therapy was my calling. I love helping others and physical therapy fascinated me with the amazing results people can achieve but… it takes many years to complete all the required courses and I wanted to find something related but not as long to complete so I came across massage therapy. The funny part is I did not do any research on it, I just found a school, talked to the dean, Dr. Wray who by the way is one of the most incredible teachers I have ever had the pleasure of learning from and started my courses at his school Texas school of massage. So that is how I became a massage therapist. I started from the bottom working for someone and barely making it, then worked with a chiropractor which was awesome and taught me a lot but it was not convenient while still going to college for Physical Therapy so that is why I decided to go on my own.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Massage Warrior story. Tell us more about the business.
I started this practice in August 2015, with the simple expectation to help people and to this day that is still the case. I am not here to try and lock you into a commitment and take your money, advertise for a longer session than you will receive or to just make you feel a little better to have you return again. My goal is to provide massage therapy for those who do not want to feel rushed, talk about any concerns and to improve their overall health. I will give an example of how it would be if you came in my office.
You walk in explaining that you are experiencing back pain and tell me that you need a strong person to get real deep in your back and no one has been able to do so. First things first are we go over your medical history and make sure there are not contraindications, surgeries, etc. Next we will run through your daily actions, from when you wake up, go to work, to when you go to bed. Then we will go through a few tests. Then comes the hands-on manipulation, the actual part you think of when getting a massage. After the session is over we discuss how you feel and the possibility of continuing with more extensive work such as at home stretching or exercising.
I am known for giving people a lasting body transformation, they don’t just come in for a massage to temporarily relieve the pain like they do with pills. After working with me you realize you get more than just a massage but rather the education on what to adjust in your life to keep the pain away.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I say luck plays a big role in my start up. When I was getting ready to start my lease at my office, I did not have any clients nor did I start advertising early on besides Facebook. I had a website but it was still new which takes time to be found and to my surprise I had an amazing amount of people calling to schedule appointments. Since then I have grown and have many clients continuing their work with me and gloating to others how this is the first time they have found relief in a while.
