Today we’d like to introduce you to Elma and Adrian Esparza. They and their team shared their story with us below:
In 1960, after a marriage and a honeymoon, the newlywed Esparza’s traded their 1959 Chevy Impala for a 1960 Datsun to begin what would become a million-dollar enterprise. Raul R. Esparza, Sr. and his wife Mary Esther Esparza, began a career in Pest Control before it was even a general practice for a female to be a commercial certified applicator. They were blessed with 4 children and adopted one and all of the men became commercial certified applicators. Eventually, the company that started in Edinburg, Texas, grew to a company in Houston with their son Rick, San Antonio with their son Orlando, and Zapata with their son Raul, Jr., and the headquarters where it all began was led by their son Adrian. Adrian then went on to marry the love of his life, Elma Espericueta. After some years of working with the company. The then teacher went on to get her Commercial certified applicator license, and the couple ran the company until Adrian gave the reigns, with the blessing of his parents, over to Elma as the sole shareholder of Esparza Pest Control and Eco-Logics Systems, Inc., and she went on to make it an SBA 8(a), SBA EDWOSB Million-dollar company.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In as much as the daily operations and the expectations of a pest control company were a daily chore, it was not as difficult as it was to get the world to accept a female commercial-certified applicator. For Mrs. Mary Esparza, it was almost a misnomer for a female to hold the title back in the 70s, but even for Mrs. Elma Esparza, it was difficult for people to want to work with a female in that position. Foregoing those challenges, Adrian and Elma were blessed with 4 children of their own, two of whom continued the family tradition, thereby making it a third-generation-owned family company. One as a commercial certified applicator, and the other was the Office manager. Because all the family was involved in the business in one way or the other, the family kept a close eye on each other and handled daily challenges as they arose.
