Hi Adam, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Hello, my name is Adam Farris. I am the Founder of Younique Abilities. I am an autism advocate and an inspirational speaker. I have been working at a retail store for 8 plus years now; I make and design websites and manage websites; I also am the chief technology officer for a small non-profit organization that deals with anti-bullying. And I do so much more.
At Younique Abilities we sell handmade with love autism awareness merchandise that is made by individuals with a unique ability vs. a disability.
Hi, my name is Adam Farris, and I don’t think of myself as disabled because I have been able to accomplish so much. Maybe none of us are really “disabled,” maybe we are all just different people with unique abilities. The world needs to understand that all of us are alike.
We believe that anybody with a “disability” has a Younique ability and can do many great things that you put your mind to, just believe in yourself and reach your maximum potential. Younique abilities sells Handmade with love Autism Awareness Merchandise, which is handmade and made by individuals with a unique ability.
One of our hopes and dreams one day is to open a storefront and hire individuals with unique abilities and let them spread their wings and fly.
We dislike using the word disabled or disability because we don’t like to label people. Instead, we should use the words unique or unique abilities or differing abilities. In the past, we have used the words disabled, but in reality, we are not disabled, we are all just different people with a unique ability. We would like the world to understand that all of us are alike in different ways.
I have autism; I was diagnosed in 2012, I am 35 years old now, so I was diagnosed at a late time in my life. Usually, autism is diagnosed in early childhood.
I also have Tourette syndrome, but has not stopped me from overcoming the impossible, to imagine the possibilities every day.
Because of my autism in 2012 and prior to I basically had no friends and was getting kicked out of places left and right. My social skills were so bad that I could not keep a job. I couldn’t stay in a restaurant or a business without being barred. When I was diagnosed with autism in 2012, I had the chance to move to North Carolina and went to a transitional living program. There, I learned to have much better social skills and worked on my life skills.
Look at me now!!! See how far I have come from 2012 to 2023. Some people might say that’s a long time; I say that’s just a short time. Now I do have friends, I do have a job, and I can stay in a business or restaurant as long as I want to. I have maintained a job since 2015.
So always believe in yourself; always believe in your dreams and passions.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been pretty smooth, but as in any business, there are always struggles.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, business sales slowed, and we usually do not make over $2,000 in sales in a year.
