Exploring Life & Business with Shemika Lacey of Crown’d Salon Studio & Suites

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shemika Lacey.

Shemika Lacey

Hi Shemika, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My interest in hair began as little girl with my mom always braiding me and my sister’s hair. The love for it grew after spending weekends with my great aunt watching her get my cousins and I ready for church in her salon that she had built onto her house. By the time I reached 8th grade, I was everyone’s hairstylist lol. One time during high school, I experimented with coloring my hair with Kool-Aid. It worked. And all the girls wanted the same lol. That’s when I knew I wanted to become a professional cosmetologist. Two months after graduation and six months pregnant, I enrolled into Blalock’s Beauty College in Shreveport, LA. I was determined to finish, although my son was soon due. Working in a salon setting as a new hairstylist and a single mom was hard. I became a certified pharmacy tech to supplement the income. My clientele was growing, but after working both jobs, I realized I didn’t go through beauty school to work like that. I wanted more. I wanted a fulfilling career as professional hairstylist. I decided to start over, packed up my apartment and two kids, and relocated to Houston, Texas. Since my move to this amazing city, God has yet to let me fail.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No one’s journey is smooth. I believe some of the obstacles I faced were meant to strengthen and develop me. A few years before my move to Houston, I found myself living at The Providence House, a transitional shelter for homeless families. This one was hard to swallow, but I didn’t question Him. I cried tho lol. One thing my mom always told me, “No one is gonna take care of you and your kids but you!” I’ve always carried that with me. Being at The Providence House pushed me in ways that I needed. I successfully graduated the program and made my move to Houston shortly after. Rebuilding clientele in a whole new city and state was hard, but I was persistent. I experienced a few customers running out on their bill, a salon owner closing the salon without notice, and even got burned by a hair product vendor. The obstacles I’ve faced were lessons that helped strengthen my endurance.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Crown’d Salon Studio & Suites?
Crown’d Salon Studio is a Houston-based full-service salon that specializes in healthy haircare and extensions. I’m widely known for my meticulous execution of traditional sew-ins and my thorough installation of tape-ins, microlink, and k-tip extensions. How do you define success?
Success is defined by personal aspirations and perspectives. In order to be successful, I believe you have to be in tune with yourself and be very clear on what you want out of life. It’s not how many numbers in your bank account or how many letters are behind your name, nor is it how many labels you can wear. Success is within. It’s the fulfillment of your heart.
