Meet Kelli Wilson of Alcove Pelvic Health Education

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelli Wilson.

Kelli Wilson

Kelli, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?

My journey to become a Pelvic Health Physical Therapist and Educator began in Houston. I attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where my specialty was dance. This made me have an appreciation for movement and the body. I also had exposure through my mother, who was a homebound teacher in Cyfair School District for the youngest population that either had a disability or illness that did not allow them to attend school- that is where I saw her work with PTs/OTs and thought- this is a profession I want to be in- everyone was so collaborative, empathetic, and positive.

After undergrad (UT Austin), I came back to Houston to attend Texas Woman’s University in the medical center and got my Doctor of Physical Therapy. I worked towards getting my Board Certification and Fellowship status (AAOMPT) in Orthopedics, but exposure to helping a patient with severe coccyx pain opened the world of pelvic health. Combining both orthopedics and pelvic health treatment strategies allowed me start Alcove Pelvic Health Education in 2015, where I provide online and in-person educational courses to medical providers, including physical therapists that want to go into pelvic health. I have gotten to travel as far as India to teach about both male and female pelvic health conditions and work towards normalizing the discussion of pelvic health for all.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Maneuvering the market of COVID from in-person courses to online options. Learning the marketing strategies and trying to stay up to date is always difficult. But I try to focus on providing great content for the pelvic health therapist.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
Alcove Pelvic Health Education provides online and in-person educational courses to medical professionals. Pelvic health is a growing field, and it is nice to see how it is booming. Recent legislation supporting peri and post-partum care is huge. And we have so much more to go. Men have pelvic floors too, and the medical management for complex pelvic pain needs more medical professionals that specialize in this field. Alcove’s mission is to educate all physical therapists on baseline education on how to treat pelvic floor dysfunction. Because the pelvic floor is synchronous with our abdominal, low back, and diaphragm muscles. One cannot work properly without the other.

I am proud to be reaching internationally offering courses as far as India.

We offer courses for not only pelvic health clinicians but NPs, PAs, and physicians taught by physicians.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is the fulfillment of learning through absorption and proper application with beneficial outcomes.
