Daily Inspiration: Meet Veronica Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Jones.

Veronica Jones

Hi Veronica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From a young age, I always loved to sing and create. Along with that, I always knew I wanted to be an attorney and be instrumental in achieving justice. Born and raised in Houston, after discovering a love for music and the arts, I went to The High School for the Performing & Visual Arts, where I focused in vocal performance. After high school, I went to college, where I continued singing in my school’s jazz band. Thereafter, I went to law school in New Orleans and after finishing, made my way back to Texas working as a criminal prosecutor. During the pandemic, my creative side screamed for an outlet, and I began growing my platform on Instagram and other social media where I shared my love for natural hair and became a natural hair influencer, and continued sharing my voice and singing. I continue to practice law, as a civil defense attorney, mainly practicing torts and civil rights defense, continuing to uphold justice in a new way. Even with my demanding career, I hold true to myself and continue to foster my creativity and grow my voice and social platforms to inform others about natural hair, natural hair products, and beauty.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are always challenges in life, however, I do believe I am stronger and more assured because of them. Career-wise, it has not always been easy. Many times, people have doubted me, dismissed me, disrespected me, or did not see my value. Growing my social media platform gave me a confidence that really helped me grow as a person and feel empowered. Growing an online community was initially scary and forced me to get out of my comfort zone. The biggest takeaway for me was understanding that I am valuable, extremely competent, and more than worthy of the opportunities given and the opportunities I’ve created for myself.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an attorney that specializes in torts and civil rights defense. I also do federal appeals and have written multiple appellate briefs to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Prior to my current position, I was a criminal prosecutor but made the switch to civil law nearly 3 years ago. In this time practicing in this new area of law, I am most proud of having an oral argument before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and having the Court affirm my position and publish their opinion on it. I believe what has set me apart is my work ethic, my ability to work with others, and my continued effort to foster a working environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The pandemic taught me to focus on my health, and to focus on my life outside of work. Prior to the pandemic, work was everything and was my main focus. However, Covid made me slow down, highlighted the value of my personal time, and pushed me to grow an online presence and become an influencer, which fostered my creative side.
