Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Boney-Henderson.
Hi Jasmine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My story is not very spectacular in my opinion. I was just a young girl who strived to be the best I could be despite my circumstances. It was never my dream to become an entrepreneur. My mom tells me that I started saying that I wanted to be a doctor as early as 4 years old, but I didn’t get the chance to go to medical school. I watched my mother work hard all of my life. It wasn’t easy growing up. I worked tirelessly to put myself through college. I didn’t grow up wealthy, but my wealth comes from the love I got from my family. They have always been my biggest supporters. They have helped groom me into the person I am today.
It may seem crazy, but honestly, I fell into entrepreneurship. I tell people all of the time that most, if not all, of my businesses started because people kept asking me to do things. Jasmine, can you do my taxes? Jasmine, how do I fix my credit? Jasmine, can you teach me the game? I would always say absolutely! That’s how I became an entrepreneur, nothing fancy.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would never say I came from nothing because I think that would downplay my mother’s efforts, but I definitely came from meager beginnings. I have always admired her work ethic, and she is the one who taught me to never make excuses. I grew up in the Third Ward Area and lived there my entire life until I became an adult. I was fortunate enough to be able to test into some of the best schools in Houston. I graduated from Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions, and if my high school experience taught me nothing else, it definitely taught me the value of hard work.
Despite all of my obstacles, I graduated from the University of Houston with a BS in Psychology, BS in Public Health Education, several minors, and an M. Ed. in Health Education. I always knew that I would go to college, and I did whatever it took to make that happen. My journey wasn’t a short as others, but those extra years taught me patience and to trust God’s timing.
My father was incarcerated for most of my life, and 5 months after he was released, he was killed. That is probably the most impactful life event that I have experienced so far. I was only 13 at the time, but the impact that had on me was immeasurable. Although he was not perfect and didn’t always make the best decisions, he was still my father. Reflecting on the things he has missed like graduating from high school, graduating from college with multiple degrees, and starting my journey into entrepreneurship, continues to be my motivation. I just want to make my family proud because there is no me without them. The late nights, minimal sleep, and hard work is definitely going to pay off in the end.

How do you define success?
Success, to me, is multifaceted. It’s not just about how much money you make or material things, but also the legacy you leave in how you treat other. On a personal level, it involves achieving a sense of fulfillment and happiness in both my personal and professional life. Professionally, success is tied to continuous growth and development, setting and achieving meaningful goals, and making significant contributions to the success to those who work with me. I believe in the importance of adaptability, resilience, and learning from challenges.
I have always thought about that idea of “What does your dash stand for?” What that refers to is on your headstone, there will be the day you were born and the day you died. In between, there is nothing but a dash. Success is making sure that that dash means something. How did you leave your mark on the world? Did you do something to help others? Have you left a legacy that you can be proud of? That’s what success is to me!
