Hidden Gems: Meet Lizeth Carrillo of Charcutebyliz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lizeth Carrillo.

Lizeth Carrillo

Hi Lizeth, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Lizeth Carrillo. I am 22 years old, and from a young age, I’ve always been told I was very creative. I didn’t know what charcuterie was until my mom went to an event in Portland, OR, and wanted to recreate at our church, I had offered to help one of the ladies put it together and ended up finishing it out on my own, and it was so fun to put together, step back and see how beautiful it was at the end. I posted it onto my personal Instagram story and had people reach out to me asking if I did this as a business. I thought to myself, “Now I do,” and opened up a new account and thought of the name Charcutebyliz, and I said, “If this is God, it will do good,” and I am now going on 2 years. This is something I couldn’t have done on my own, and I started with no knowledge of cheese whatsoever with the help of God, my family, and friends.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been an easy road. Every day, I learn something new about having your own business, whether it be about the business side and how to figure out pricing or simply what should belong on a cheeseboard? Learning how to profit and not give away has been the hardest part for sure.

We’ve been impressed with Charcutebyliz, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a luxury cheese expert. I specialize in grazing tables and most known for flat spreads. I love to get to know my customers personally and offer a prayer petition at the end of every form that is filled out. I truly believe that is what sets me and my business apart. I’m proud of how far I’ve gotten, of course, with God’s help. I fully depend on Him to help me with the creativity aspect, and always want to give my customer the best service and experience.

We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
This is my full-time job. I haven’t gone back to work since. I’ve worked in restaurants and retail, and not going back to a traditional job has been the biggest risk. I am not really a risk-taker. I like to play things safe and stay comfortable, but it has been 2 years since I’ve had a job, and don’t plan to. It has definitely changed my perspective and has pushed and stretched me for the better.
