Today we’d like to introduce you to Priscilla Francis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey in the field of social work began over a decade ago when I started working with the Department of Children and Families as a case manager. It was during this time that I witnessed firsthand the profound impact of mental health on the lives of both adults and children. This experience ignited a passion within me to address the need for effective therapy, particularly from professionals who shared similar backgrounds with their clients.
Motivated by this realization, I pursued my master’s degree at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. As I delved into my studies, I became more acquainted with the ethical approaches of social work and the importance of community-based interventions. The gap in accessible and culturally sensitive therapy services became increasingly evident, especially within the African American community.
My personal background, growing up in New York City to Jamaican immigrant parents, and my professional experiences in Houston working with individuals facing life-threatening illnesses all played a pivotal role in shaping my perspective as a therapist. My therapy approach is grounded in realism, honesty, and authenticity. I believe in holding hope for my clients, even when they may struggle to see it themselves, and strive to assist them in viewing their lives from alternative perspectives.
One key aspect of my therapeutic philosophy is to ensure that clients receive their desired outcomes without experiencing shame or judgment from me. I am committed to creating a safe and non-judgmental space where individuals can explore their challenges, strengths, and aspirations. My overarching goal is to empower clients to navigate their journeys with resilience and a sense of agency, fostering positive change in their lives.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where I am today has been far from smooth. Balancing my roles as a mother, therapist, and business owner has been one of the most challenging aspects. Juggling personal life while striving to excel in my profession often leaves me feeling like there aren’t enough hours in the day.
The constant battle with self-doubt and the fear of financial responsibilities that come with being self-employed have been significant hurdles. Believing in oneself amidst the uncertainties of entrepreneurship can be daunting, but I’ve learned to confront these fears head-on. There were times when I questioned my decisions and abilities, but the key was to be forgiving to myself for any missteps along the way.
One crucial lesson I’ve embraced is that an “L” doesn’t always mean a loss; sometimes, it’s a valuable lesson. Learning from mistakes has been instrumental in my growth. Understanding that the future is shaped by what I do today has shifted my perspective, allowing me to show up every single day with determination.
Over the years, I’ve found solace in connecting with fellow business owners and seeking guidance from local organizations. The exchange of experiences and insights has been invaluable. Asking questions, learning from others, and being open to new perspectives have all played a role in overcoming the challenges on this journey. By actively engaging with the community and drawing strength from shared experiences, I’ve managed to decrease the noise in my head that tells me I can’t. This continuous process of learning, adapting, and staying resilient has been instrumental in navigating the ups and downs of the entrepreneurial path.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a healing EMDR-trained therapist, and I take immense pride in providing therapy services tailored to individual needs. My extensive background as a social worker has shaped my journey, leading me to work with diverse populations, including children and families in foster care, Houstonians living with infectious diseases in a medical clinic, and seniors undergoing dialysis.
What sets me apart is my commitment to working with minorities, particularly women, creating a safe and inclusive space for them to explore their authentic selves. I bring my genuine self into the therapy space, fostering an environment where clients feel comfortable doing the same.
In my therapeutic practice, I integrate various approaches such as EMDR, Gottman Method, Cognitive Behavioral, person-centered, and Reiki. These diverse tools allow me to offer a unique and personalized experience for each client. I founded Gem Counseling & Consulting Services in 2018 to provide a space dedicated to helping individuals become their best authentic selves. Later, Gem Healing Group was established to extend this mission and empower more Texans to grow, empower, and motivate themselves.
What I am most proud of is my ability to seamlessly incorporate clinically trained skills with my faith and spirituality, including the use of crystals and gems. This holistic approach offers a distinctive therapeutic experience for clients centered around their unique needs and personality, steering away from cookie-cutter services. My focus on the disadvantaged sets me apart, as I excel in addressing a variety of issues and providing individualized treatment that respects each person’s uniqueness.
I firmly believe in the importance of a strong therapeutic relationship and your comfort with me. Recognizing that one style of therapy or therapist may not work for everyone, I am dedicated to adapting my approach to ensure the best possible outcome for your healing journey. In essence, my goal is to offer authentic and personalized services that resonate with each client’s individuality.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something surprising that most people who know me through my work may not be aware of is that, in the past year, I’ve delved into providing corporate trainings and giving presentations. This newfound avenue has allowed me to engage in realistic conversations about mental health, both in individual lives and within our communities. It’s been a fulfilling experience to broaden the discussion on important topics.
Beyond my role as a psychotherapist, I have also ventured into participating in various podcasts, covering diverse subjects such as toxic parenting, faith and spirituality, and friendship. Engaging in these conversations outside of the therapy room has been an enriching extension of my commitment to mental health awareness.
On a more personal note, I’m a huge outdoor enthusiast, finding solace and joy in activities like hiking and camping. Nature has always been a source of inspiration and rejuvenation for me. Additionally, I possess a strong creative side, with a passion for interior decorating and painting. These creative outlets not only serve as a means of self-expression but also contribute to my overall well-being. The intersection of my professional and personal interests has added depth to my journey, allowing me to connect with others in unexpected and meaningful ways.
