Conversations with Kayla Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Thomas.

Kayla Thomas

Hi Kayla, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I don’t even know where or how to start 🤣

I grew up an only child & my life was pretty normal. It was when I hit my late teens that life gave me a good slap in the face. it was all of a sudden me & my mom on our own & the struggles were real-life ones, but that’s the first moment in life I saw God provide in ways I didn’t think possible. A few years later, I ended up pregnant with my son & just a few months following; my grandpa passed away. With both creating life & seeing the loss of it in a matter of months, that’s when I started to document everything. I found a love for lifestyle photography. Not just the pretty photos of smiling at a camera, but true love & connection between people. We didn’t take family photos growing up. almost every photo we had growing up, someone was missing because someone had to stand behind the camera to take it. I have a heart in what I do & who I’m capturing. I’ve cried behind the camera so many times seeing the bride walk down the aisle or when a dad holds their baby with pure joy during a session. It’s amazing the milestones I’ve been able to experience with so many people! I’m beyond grateful for what I get to do.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s been so many learning curves through my business & throughout my life in general. Surprisingly enough, I would say one of my biggest struggles with my business is to stay creative & to stay unique to me. It’s easy to compare, especially with so many other artists showcasing their work all over social media constantly.

It’s easy to get into the grind & get in such a business mindset that you lose creativity. It took years for me to figure out how to get out of this because I realized it happens the most during my busy seasons. This past year, I’ve realized collaboration with other creatives, photographers, & business owners is what ended up helping me. I’m so grateful for all of those people, every ounce of support they’ve given me & all of the trust they’ve given me when we collab.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a lifestyle photographer! My heart is with couples & showcasing their love/journey. I’ve also found a new love for helping small businesses market themselves, find their brand, & helping their visions come to life!

I’m most proud of the fact that I’m able to connect with so many people. That’s part of our purpose in life – connection. How many people get to do that every day in their work life & it be able to feel so purposeful? God lead me here & I can’t give enough glory to Him. I wouldn’t have been able to continue this business in some seasons of life without Him keeping it afloat & every single time, it was from connections He lead me to.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was shy, but around the right people, I was loud, goofy, & always laughing. I loved art. Remember Myspace? That was my stuff right there! I’d skip out on doing my homework & redo it every single day. Don’t even get me started on the photo shoots I’d force some of my friends into 🤣 what a time to be alive!
