Hidden Gems: Meet Josh Scott of JRS Performance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Scott.

Josh Scott

Hi Josh, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After graduating with a kinesiology degree while playing four years of basketball at Texas Lutheran University, I returned home to The Woodlands and began my training journey. I became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and got my first job working with Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation in the Woodlands. Here, I worked alongside physical therapists, learning, observing, and compiling experience. I then began honing my craft and training youth athletes in the community. I would train clients in their garage, in their home gyms, at public parks, and at various gyms around town. After several years of training youth, high school, and collegiate athletes, as well as general population clients in The Woodlands, I decided to create my own brand and start my own sports performance training business called JRS Performance. The vision and goal I had for JRS Performance was to create a safe and positive training environment where clients of all ages, skill levels, and walks of life could pursue their performance and fitness goals with the absolute best instruction available. As a former collegiate athlete, I already had the mindset that I would simply never be outworked and began stacking my schedule, even training 14 sessions in a single day once. After several years of training and building a reputation in the north Houston area, I began running my business out of a brand-new facility called Woodlands SportsPlex in 2020. Here, my career truly began to blossom and unfold as I had access to a much larger facility, more equipment, and more space with the potential to draw in a larger clientele base. I slowly began to emerge as the premiere program in the Houston area for athletes to become fast, powerful, and explosive. After three years had passed, I had trained countless youth and high school athletes not just from the Woodlands but from all over North Houston. I was also fortunate enough to train many NCAA athletes of various sports and help current high school athletes earn scholarships at the Division 1 level. I tapped into the NCAA and ran the strength and conditioning program for the University of St. Thomas men’s basketball team in Houston for 3 years and the women’s basketball team and volleyball team for 1. As my unique training style began to shine on social media, I found myself training countless professional athletes from the USFL, XFL, CFL, IFL, and over 35 NFL players, including Kwon Alexander, Najee Harris, Calvin Austin, Eric Ebron, K’Lavon Chaisson, & Demar Hamlin.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Making a name for yourself in the fitness industry as a trainer is very challenging. In a very watered-down profession, you have to work that much harder than the rest to make yourself stand out. The profession itself requires a lot of time on your feet, which can be exhausting. It calls for very odd hours, waking up extremely early, training all day and into the night, including weekends, and even skipping out on friends’ or family time to train clients. Sometimes you are low on sleep and have to skip your lunch all in an attempt to give your clients the best possible product and be as accommodating as possible to your loyal clientele. To say it is a grind is an understatement. One of the struggles I went through was trying to find an optimal training facility that I could run my business out of. I needed a spot that made sense financially and also a place I could really call home and grow as a trainer. This was not an easy task as the Woodlands is a very high-end community with expensive real estate. I did my fair share of moving from facility to facility to find the most optimal environment. I can say the biggest challenge I had in my life, as well as career, was the loss of my father. In 2018, my father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away about 8 months after he was diagnosed. This left my family and myself devastated, as my father was my biggest fan when I was growing up playing sports. In high school, as my love of basketball grew, he took notice of my work ethic as I would be outside all day shooting and practicing. One day he pulled me aside as I came in for a glass of water and told me with the work ethic I possess, I should really think about starting my own business one day. As tragic as his death was, I attribute a lot of my training success and passion for my career to my father. JRS Performance is a direct byproduct of everything he taught me.

As you know, we’re big fans of JRS Performance. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
JRS Performance is a fitness and sports performance training company. We specialize in training athletes of all sports and ages to become faster, stronger, and more explosive, all while mitigating the risk of injury during gameplay. My programs for athletes include a medley of sprint training, plyometrics, medicine ball throws and both max and dynamic strength training to enhance fast twitch muscle fiber development. My belief is that training should revolve around hitting all areas of the force-velocity curve with the end goal being able to produce higher loads at higher velocities. This is how we become more explosive. I am located in The Woodlands and currently train clients at Woodlands Sportsplex, Core Fitness, and The Club at Carlton Woods. I have group, private, and semi-private sessions available for youth, high school, collegiate, and professional athletes. I also specialize in general fitness for clients interested in losing body fat, gaining strength and muscle mass, or improving their flexibility, mobility, and overall health. For clients that aren’t local, I also offer online training programs so you can work with me virtually. As a Woodlands native, I am proud to say my brand has an excellent reputation based on results-driven training and professionalism. I have compiled over 13 years of training experience with a wide range of clients. Whether you’re an NFL running back or a 14-year-old learning to strength train safely, I have an effective program for you.
