Today we’d like to introduce you to Kynnedi Brown.
Hi Kynnedi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Relocating from Dallas to Houston at the age of 18 marked one of the most daunting chapters in my life. Fresh out of high school amid a global pandemic, entangled in a toxic relationship, and navigating my parents’ divorce, all while grappling with college anxieties – it was a whirlwind. The prospect of a new city, new people, and an entirely new life was both exhilarating and terrifying. In my initial semester of freshman year, the road back to Dallas seemed like a constant temptation. However, as winter break approached, I made a resolution to not only advance my education but to break free from my shell and seize the opportunities of the next four years.
I immersed myself in campus life, forging new connections and even promoting my music. Taking a bold step, I aspired to become a student leader and ran an exceptional campaign for Miss Sophomore. I didn’t win. However, the outcome turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Undeterred, I decided to vie for the title of Miss RLH, a role that demanded pageantry, skills, talents, and communication prowess. Faced with the unexpected challenge of losing my voice just days before the pageant, I asked God, “is this even for me? Am I forcing this whole thing? Why would my voice go days before the pageant?” so I called the pageant director and told her that I would not be participating. Yet, on the day of the event, a compelling urge led me to participate. To my surprise, I not only summoned the courage to compete but also emerged victorious in every category except one – if that’s not God’s divine healing, I don’t know what is.
From that moment onward, I began to unravel the layers of my identity. I discovered myself as a creative force, a girl devoted to positive self-expression through the arts, one passionate about empowering others, and someone who thrives on the act of creation. Throughout the remainder of my journey at Texas Southern, I remained actively engaged in student leadership and joined organizations that provided an outlet for my creative expression. This period of matriculation was transformative as I delved deeper into understanding my purpose, emerging with a newfound drive. This drive, in turn, has become a powerful force propelling me to inspire and empower the youth. I always knew that I wanted to change the world, I just didn’t know how until now. How? By just being me. Here I am now, gracefully serving as The 76th Miss Texas Southern University.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Embarking on the college journey has been far from easy, and throughout my time here, I’ve weathered a variety of experiences. Among the hurdles I’ve encountered are the loss of identity, to navigating friendships that lacked genuine support, enduring heartbreak, and facing moments of embarrassment. However, each of these setbacks, or what some may label as “L’s,” holds a unique significance in my gratitude. I embrace each of these setbacks with understanding, as they have collectively sculpted me into the resilient woman standing today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my role as Miss Texas Southern University, my responsibilities extend beyond a mere title; it’s a full-time commitment. Serving as the liaison between students and administration, I’ve made it my mission to instill the values of self-love, self-care, and self-improvement. My focus is on empowering students to embrace their authentic selves, recognizing authenticity as the catalyst for transformation. As a content creator, I find joy in editing and communicating through my camera. Additionally, I express myself through music, and this year, I dedicated myself to releasing my music with the belief that there’s always someone who resonates with it.
What sets me apart is not just the title but the pride I take in the person I’m becoming. Beyond accomplishments, I am most proud of my personal growth and the conscious choice to prioritize happiness over dwelling on the past. This journey is a testament to my commitment to authenticity and positive transformation.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most significant lesson I’ve gleaned from my journey is the importance of embracing my authentic self. During my time at Texas Southern, I encountered moments of self-criticism and comparison, oblivious to the fact that I radiated light in rooms filled with darkness. It took a while for me to realize that my true impact comes from simply being myself—following the path The Lord has called me to and walking with a clear sense of purpose. You don’t have to change who you are or follow every trend; just be you. Nobody can do you like YOU. As always, with love, KJB.
